LBS trade ins

This may be a stupid question, but I don't know the answer, so I will ask it.

Do LBSs usually accept older bikes for partial payment on a new bike?

Unfortunately, no.

You'll usually have better luck (and get more $) selling an old bike yourself and using the money towards buying a new bike.

That depends on the shop. There are 3 shops within 10 miles of me and 2 of them do not and one of them does accept trade-ins. But then again, their prices are through the roof.

Same as a used car dealer, those that do won't give you nearly what it's worth. Not because they're trying to screw you, but because it's sound business practice. Besides, if you find the right place to sell it, a lot of times you can get more than it's worth.
