Ok, i am now looking for other cycling websites to trade links with or co-brand the forums with, can everyone please list there favorite 5 - 10 cycling websites? Also, if you can, list if the site currently has a forum / bbs or not.

If you can put them in categories, that would be awesome, im basicly looking for 5 - 10 sites in each of the main forum categories to trade links with. My original goal was to co-brand with 15 - 25 sites. But the more i try the co-branding thing, the more work it becomes, so i think im going to link exchange with 5 sites per category, or 90 other websites.

BTW, there will be a major forum update next week with some new awesome features, and probly a whole new look. I'll keep everyone updated!

This forum is my favorite, but I don't suppose you want to link to yourself!
As I am new at this, I only have a couple of other places I go to:
www.bicycling.about.com They have a lot of articles, and a forum
www.halcyon.com/gasman/ Just lots of good information
www.sheldonbrown.com/beginners/index.html More good info

So far, that is it for me! Hope this help.

I took a look at www.bicyclinglife.com last week following a suggestion by, I think, Mike, and was impressed. A lot of basic information attractively presented, and a lot of things useful to beginners; there seem to be a lot of beginners on this forum, so that would be a plus.

Like Nebill, I enjoy the about.com bicycling forum. It's not as much fun as this one, but what is? Bigger and more impersonal, but has lots of very sound advice from some very seasoned contributors.

I'm so excited !!! I can't wait!! Do you mean next week as in after today(sunday may 20th) next week, or next week as in the week after next sunday?

I like brandfordbike.com,
Nashbar.com
Velonews.com

By the by, I strongly recommend that you try to get hooked up with Nashbar.com, between nashbar, performance and REI I think you would get a lot of money to help with the website expenses. I try to buy everything from performance right now because I feel guilty buying anywhere else( cuz if I do you don't get any money.

Awesome, thanks, im actualy only making $20 - $35 a month off performance and rei, no where close to paying for the cost of the site... I may have to start selling advertising on the site, but im going to hold out as long as posible.

Fubar, the update will have quite a few new features, i hope to have the site updated by friday the 25th, if not sooner.

Keep the sites coming! These are awesome so far

Man. Fujidude nailed 2 of my top 3 right out of the chute (Gasman and Sheldon Brown).

In the category of "rides," a site that'll be awesome when more people start feeding in info:
http://www.bikethisway.com/

I think it's a real good complement to this site, and like having a ride log online.

For equipment reviews, I always check out
http://www.roadbikereview.com/, and
http://www.mtbr.com/

Joe, are you looking for sites that sell bike stuff? Or are you looking for news and information types sites? Or both?

www.Jensonusa.com always has good deals
www.excelsports.com has some cool stuff
www.Pricepiont.com is cheap, but I wonder why? they could be one of those places that get products that weren't good enough for everywhere else, so pricepoint gets it and sells it for cheap.

www.speedgoat.com is pretty cool, I get a free issue of dirtragmag from them.

Not to sound stupid and ignorant, but what do you mean by that?
Trade links? what links?
co-brand? I'm in the dark

I'm not trying to be rude, I just don't understand it very well, and if you tell me what your thinking it may help me.

I like many of the sites already posted above. Some others I like include:

www.icebike.com
www.oldroads.com

www.schwinn.com is OK, but a bit thin right now because it just went through a cleansing process to get rid of some bad contributors.

Joe,
I am not sure if these are the type things you can use, but here are a couple of special purpose sites, primarily for OLN TV cycling listings and news

http://www.velonews.com

Fubar, no problem. Co-branding the forums out would put these forums on other cycling websites. So if I were to co-brand with say, yahoo.com (hah!) yahoo would make the forums look like there website, and only yahoo visitors would see the yahoo version of the forums. This is a win-win situation for everyone, 1st, yahoo has instant content for there website, forums are sticky, so users come back again and again. 2nd, the forums will have more exposure to the cycling world, yahoo will be sending new users that we can talk with, we will have more users, posts and threads.

I would like to Co-Brand the forums with a small handful of the best general cycling sites ib the net, 20 max. Instead of me working to get people to register and post on the forums, I'll have 20 webmasters working. Right now I receive ~350 unique visitors a day, most come from search engines, or other cycling websites that like the forums. With Co-Branding we may have 20 webmasters sending 100 unique visitors from each site, taking our traffic from 350 unique visitors to 2,000 visitors! More traffic = more posts and information exchanged.

As for link exchanges, this is a more commonly used way of getting traffic by webmasters. Its kinda like "I'll put a link to your page if you put a link to my page". Im not quite sure if I want to Co-Brand the forums out, or do link exchanges. I may do a combination of both. If I do link exchanges, I would like to find the top 5 websites for each category (i.e. top 5 commuting websites) then trade buttons / logos with them. I want to offer the other sites a 88x31 logo (small button) on the bottom of each of my pages in that category. For exchange, the other site would put my button / logo on there website with a link to the forums. The downside to link exchanges, is the other webmaster will not have the stickiness of forums on there website, just a link to these forums, however on the upside, they will receive a lot of new traffic as there button will be shown 20,000 to 60,000 times a month on this website.

I hope that clears it up, I just received a e-mail from one of our lurkers here (for every 1 registered member, we have over 50 lurkers!) with a list of over 50 cycling websites. I think there right from his favorites menu, I'll try to list them in this thread in the near future.

I hope that helps explain my plans for this site.

Thanks Joe, it all makes sense now. So for the co-branding you actually want other websites with forums?

I have seen a half dozen or so great websites out there with forums, that are dead, or there using bad software, the sites get great traffic, some get a few hundred users a day, or more. Let me tell you, it is HARD to get forums going! This site took almost 18 months before it really took off, I want to offer these other webmasters my forums on there site, with there look.

They (the other bike sites) would have an instant community where there users can come back day after day to read the forums. We (the users here) would also have the privilege of new users every day, more people to talk with, more posts, and more ideas tossed around. Its seriously a win-win situation.

A lot of these webmasters that have forums cant put in the few hours a day it takes to run them, they don't have a server big enough to handle the traffic and load. The server that this site on is a P-III 633 with 512meg of ram, It can hold up to 250 concurrent users at any given time, and the software is able to hold over 2,000,000 posts!

I can offer the forums for there site free of charge, I will take care of all moderation and administration, I would take care of backing up the forums, and keeping them running, and promotion of the forums, awesome idea, isn't it? Now I just need to find the top 10 - 15 cycling sites on the Internet that want to co-brand with me, I don't want to have too many sites co-branded with me, as I don't really want *every* good site showing the same forums, I want the end user to think that the site they visit the forums from really has over 5000 registered members and is the biggest forum on the net

Remind me to delete this thread once we find the best cycling sites on the net...

Fubar, i didnt answer your question, the short answer is Yes

Steve, the best way i could tell you to promote your forum & website is with a simple link in the footer of each post (i have three links in my footer), you can do this in your User Control Panel, click the link in the header. The more you post, the more your link will be on the forums, and the more users you will recive to sign up. I wish you luck on your site, but be prepared for some hard times ahead, its all worth it, i get a few thank you PM's every week from users, i love to read each one
