Anyone have any advice concerning Shipping a MTB?

A friend of mine has offered to give me a lightly used bike free of charge. The only problem is that the bike would need to be shipped, and my friend has no way of disassembling or packaging the thing.

Does anyone have any suggestions concerning shipping a MTB cross country?

I was considering contacting their LBS and inquiring if they would disassemble, package, and ship the bike and how much such a service would cost. Then having the bike shipped to me or directly to my LBS for reassebmly. I just have no idea if LBS' are generally willing or able to do such things or if there are better / cheaper alternatives I'm overlooking.

Anyone have any experience or advice that might be of assistance?

That's the way that it's commonly done. I'd anticipate paying a total of about $125.00 for packing, shipping, and reassembly. A really good packing job is very important and a bike shop will at least know what a good packing job should look like. Shipping is normally a little less for business to business than to a private residence.

I think $125.00 to pack and ship a bike is excessive unless you're shipping a very high end bike. The UPS store sells a bike box for about $20.00. You can do a google search and see the proper way to ship a bike. I believe you just have to remove the front wheel and handlebar leaving all the cables intact making assembly easy.

You don't even have to buy a box. Most shops will give you a bike box. I don't think I have ever had to buy one.

most shops will do it quite cheaply. I'd say less than $50. You don't have to do much work, handlebars, pedals and a wheel and they'll usually fit.

Thanks again for the info everyone.

As it turns out the frame had been damaged while the bike was in storage, so I won't be going this route after all. It's good to know for the future though.
