Help -- running for LAB Board

I am running for the position of LAB Region 4 Director and I need help.

In order to appear on the ballot next spring, I need 50 signatures from LAB members in the region (Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio). I am sending this message to ask for member's signatures and for help getting signatures from other LAB members. Local club meetings are an excellent place to get signatures.

My reasons for running are as follows:

1) I believe the League should do much more to educate all citizens that bicycles are vehicles that should be used on the roads and driven according to standard traffic laws.

2) The League has not been working effectively to protect our right to use the roads. I believe LAB should vigorously lobby to improve state cycling traffic laws, educate law enforcement officials and support cyclists wrongly prosecuted for using the roads. This should be of special concern to cyclists from Michigan, Ohio and Illinois because of recent court cases (Clark, Selz, and Boob/Latimer).

3) I am concerned about the direction of the League's policies, especially maintaining the quality of the BikeEd program. As a Regional Director as well as a League Cycling Instructor I will address this issue.

4) I would like to work with the Member Involvement Committee to revitalize the League's historical support for local organizations. Most of America is outside the Washington DC Beltway. I think LAB should support grassroots advocacy.

I was certified as a League Cycling instructor this past April. I have been quite active with the Ohio Bicycle Federation, particularly in the area of cycling education, traffic law reform and protecting our right to the roads.

Locally, I have researched local bicycle traffic laws in NE Ohio. Of 60 communities surveyed so far, about half have ordnances that mandate dangerous practices. State traffic law must not allow this crazy quilt of local ordnances. I want LAB to take an active role in fixing this problem (at the state level). You can see my work on this issue at https://www.crankmail.com/bike-res.html.

I have been working with a small committee on a proposed model version of bicycle-related rules in the Uniform Vehicle Code plus rating the current UVC. You can see the draft via a link from my candidacy statement or directly from https://www.geocities.com/fredoswald/law-reform.html.

For a longer list of my credentials, please see my candidacy statement at https://www.geocities.com/fredoswald/LAB.html.

I look forward to the contest, and if elected, I pledge to actively communicate with members or our region. If you have concerns and questions you would like me to address, please let me know about them.

Any LAB member who lives in the region can sign on to my petition by downloading the pdf file at https://www.geocities.com/fredoswald/LAB-petition.pdf or via a link from my candidacy statement at https://www.geocities.com/fredoswald/LAB.html. I will email it to anyone who wishes.

I have less than 30 days to collect 50 signatures. I need your help. Please also distribute my petition to other LAB members in the region.

Thanks,
Fred

Thanks to Joe for fixing the links. Apparently I need to learn how to post with links. I see the buttons above the message window. I ignored them in my earlier post.

To test this link entering, let me tell you about a "Bicycle Driving Seminar" file that is available for download as a pdf file at Intro. to BikeEd at www.crankmail.com/BikeEd-Intro.pdf
