I知 looking to get a pair of sandals that are spd compatible. I知 a little worried though, I had a pair of teva sandals (non-cycling specific) some time ago that were made with that same rubber type material on the sole. my feet stunk so bad from sweating and the material, I had to throw out the shoes. I知 thinking about giving the Sette MK sandals a try. They池e not too pricy and I won稚 feel so bad if I have to abandon them. Anyone have any experience with Sette MK PD Sandals? Or any other suggestions for sandals or strategies so that my feet won稚 smell so bad with that type of material? Thanks.

I have a pair of shimano sandals for about 6 years now and they don't smell. I wear them maybe 4 or 5 months out of the year. I wear them on a daily commute when the weather's nice.

I have heard from friends that certain models of the Teva sandals have the stinky problems. I think the Teradactyl(sp?) has been the biggest problem. Has something to do with the materials used to make the footbed. So it may not be you, but the Tevas (especially if you've never had the problem with other shoes/sandals).

I have the Shimano's. First pair I not only wore on every ride (about 140 miles/week), but also wore them every place I went as normal walking shoes. No problem for me.

oh yeah, tevas are stinky. get used to that. As an experienced connoisseur of sandals, I've tried just about everything out there. Teva does make an anti-microbial footbed, usually $10 up from the same model with the normal footbed, and that works great - until it gets wet once or twice, then it stops working, and you're back to stinky.

Avoid organic. Leather sandals will kill you if you're not careful when you take them off after a 12-hour day.

Birkenstocks are only a little stinky.

I've had good luck with sport-specific sandals, though I haven't owned cycling sandals yet. Chacos rarely get stinky, even with day-long hikes.

Adidas sandals with the little pokey rubber bits (the "massage" footbed) never get stinky, I assume because they breathe so well.


A tip: when your sandals stick, do NOT febreze them. they get even stinkier. Instead, drop some cedar in them, or baking soda, or rubbing alcohol, though that might damage the material.

I ride the "Lakes" sandals during the warm months. No smell and really great for riding and swimming, etc. My wife has the Shimano's. Same sole but they are a bit more confining. Both are great and you can usually get a good deal on them at season's end.

ha. i guess i just have sweaty feet to begin with...i don't know, they just do.

i have no problem with non-cycling sandals/flip flops; i wear sanuks and am very happy with them. price point has those settes that i mentioned above on sale. anyone using them?

If you get up and move around, hiking, canoeing, etcetera, your feet will sweat. It does depend on the type of sandal, I've had ones that I've thrown out because of the stinkage, (although I've never had this problem with Tevas,) and ones I've worn for years with no problemo. I'll probably be getting the Shimano sandals this Summer or Fall, they seem a bit expensive, but after reading reviews about how long they apparently last, you'd spend $65 or $70 on sandals that durable that WEREN'T cycling-specific. All I wear in the summer are Birkenstocks and Tevas, with some BMX pedals on my bike.

I had completely forgotten about Stinky Sandal Syndrome. I had a pair of teva-type sandals I had to trash because of this. I don't think it was sweat -- it was because of getting then wet once or twice.

I wear birkenstocks now, and no problem with smell, not even remotely.

As for cycling sandals, I just got a pair of the Shimano sandals (for ｣15!!) and while I haven't attached the cleat yet, MAN are they comfortable around the house! Everybody has raved about them and now I see why. I think it is at least partly due to the "rocker" effect the shape of the sole has.

an update-- i bought the new shimano sandals (size 45/46) and have been wearing for most of the week...on and off of the bike. no stinky sandal syndrome as of yet, and comfortable so far but the longest ride i've been on has only been 10 miles. i can walk fine in them. actaully, the cleat in set in the shoe so much that i can't tell that it's in there when walking. i wore them to work and didn't get yelled at for wearing sandals. so, these will be on my feet for the next 6 or 7 months. i'm very happy with them so far. oh, and the shoe is pretty narrow, which works out well for me, but if you have a wide foot, you might want to stay away from these.

Did the size conversion work fine? I don't feel like hunting throughout denver to find a pair. Performancebike says 45/46 equates to 11-11.5 US
I'm curious if this is accurate. Just paranoid about ordering shoes via the internet.

you can google the conversions.

My new Shimano sandals are also very comfortable. I rode about 40 miles in them. When the snow started to get very wet, I switched to the shoes and some waterproof overbooties.

the lake touring sandals are built on a wider last than the shimanos for those of us with wider feet.

Good point, but beware some have had problems when using lakes, they can be so wide they hit the crank arms. THere was one poster who wore a very large size, who had to install pedal extensions when using lakes.

I wear my shimano sandals year round. Bare feet and sandals in summer, 2 pairs of wool socks with sealskinz waterproof socks and sandals in winter. And every temp change combo in between.

They are awesome

I will have to extend/relocate the velcro to accommodate more socks in my sandals.

i wear an 11 -11.5, depending on the shoe and yes, the conversion was right on. i have some in between a half an inch to a quarter inch from the end of my toe to the end of the shoe.

when my Tevas get stinky, i run them through the laundry machine. clears the funk right up.

another solution i've used that's only a little more complicated is a pressure washer; works just as well as the washer, but not as easy.

What about washing the sandals with a quick shot of clorox and a rinse with boiling water?

I do that to my non cycling sandals and they work fine. I'll probably get some sandals soon, I like them!
