Texans driving 40 foot RV's pulling a SUV over Colorado passes.

They have no clue how wide they are or where the rear of their parade is .

These guys (and gals) are driving the equivalent of a semi-truck with no special training or a commercial driver's license.

You should have a category for "All of the above", since I have never pinned it down enough to look in my mirror and say "Crap, here comes an X , I'd better be prepared for it. Jerks can appear out of nowhere driving anything.

I would say that it is those who drive a car that cost less then my bike, you know the one, they spent 1k on the car, and put another 1k in the rims, tires, and systems
I think they drive like they do b/c you would not be able to tell if they hit anything or not b/c it already look like a piece of...

hands down, its pickup drivers they have to be the worst especially the young ones, they can't drive for beans, and you can tell they are an idiot just by loooking at them, they usually have a goatee, and are wearing a wife beater and a ballcap, and when the light turns green they always floor it off the start.

The absolute worst--middle-aged white men in rural and suburban areas driving large US-built pickup trucks. Double aggression points if there are Christian, Republican, or country radio station stickers on the truck's ass end.

My bike knows no politics, but I'm sensing some strong anti-Republican vibes here. At the next Republican party meeting (really a bike-hating Nazi Klan rally) I'll have a talk with them about being nicer.

My real question is why list Volvos? They are not even a type of car like the others lists. I have an old one and it has no bike sensing radar or other spoke jamming devices. Most Volvo people tend to be nice and safety conscious in my experience. You never see one on Cops running from a DUI stop? So, I’m guessing it also a personal bias.

Do you know the difference between a BMW and a porcupine? On a porcupine the pricks are on the outside.

Kind Regards,

A Republican Volvo-driving Cyclist (is that an oxymoron?)

Hey JoeTown

It took me about 5 posts here before I realized that many regular posters on this forum are tree-hugging, anti-war, Bush-hating liberals. I started to get permission to enter the political discussion section, but decided against it because I'm sure I would be banned within minutes of defending our President. I suspect many regulars here also troll around the infected waters of Indymedia and DemocraticUnderground. Keep the topic on cycling and there is a wealth of information to be found here. Likewise, leave the political discussions to the experts.

I think you'll find we at BF are a well mixed group,
falling on all sides of the political spectrum
(is that politically correct?).
It is surprizing tho, given the general belief that all
cyclists are pinko leftist liberal communists.

I didn't think you could be a republican and own a Volvo
(except for the wife's station wagon), I know thats the
general rule for Saabs

SUV's, Minivans, and pickup trucks!!! They make me sooooo mad on the road, both in my car and on my bike. They are ssssslllllooooowwwwww, big, and most are just inconsiderate. When I am driving, I usually drive fast. Those three vehicles will almost always be the ones that will hold me up!

Howdy ngateguy,
I saw a few in this thread (see below), and those where the ones commented about. You must have missed them. If you'll notice I didn't have anything nasty to say about anyone in my post, well other than BMW owners. Nuff said?

White men in big domestic pickup trucks with oversized tires.
The meanest ones always seem to have 1.) Little chrome fish, 2.)Country music radio station sticker 3.)Faded sticker from local Republican political candidate on the bumper and/or tailgate. Interestingly, the meanest drivers always have "pro-life" (meaning, let 'em get born so I can run 'em over?) stickers, the most civilized and courteous have NRA, gun rights, and military emblems. Go figure! I have yet to have a serious scare from either a black driver or (in last 15-20 years, since these symbols came into use) a vehicle with either a rainbow or the little out-queer pink triangle.

Marty,
I was just as suprised as anyone that I fell for a Volvo. Besides I don't totally fit the standard Republican profile. I often wonder how much sense it makes to ride a bike in traffic and drive a car known for its safety.

I think it depends on your region. Here in Taxachussetts, any small winter beater with a kid in it or the hopped up small foreign cars.

Hmmm... are we to assume here that Stephen King's visions have come true and cars have somehow become animated and are running around creating all sorts of mayhem?

Aging geezers in big, new buicks, or doddery old ladies in their big old cars.

And teenagers with their parents SUVS. I nearly got creamed by one the other day, he nearly blew a stop sign.

Ditzy moms on cell phones in SUVs.

Around here I have the most problems with twenty-somethings driving Commodores, especially if they've got a few of their mates in there with them*. Someone whose bravado is inversely proportional to their ability is always going to be a worry.

* The IQ of any group of young men in public can be worked out by taking the IQ of the most intelligent member and dividing it by the number of members of the group. This mitigates as they get older, but not much.

P.S. Hugging a tree is actually quite a rewarding experience. I thoroughly recommend it.

In east Texas, it seems like every other vehicle is a truck. In all fairness, one of my vehicles is a Chevy Silverado...but I am a wonderful driver! Some of the rednecks around here are REALLY bad drivers though!

So you quoted two posts out of how many that whinged about the Republicans? Hardly enough to constitute a conspiracy in my view. BTW, I am firmly in the "make up my own mind on individual issues" party when it comes to politics, and in recent times that has become increasingly lonely. I tend to stay out of the political discussions because there are too many people on both sides trying to push one agenda or the other without bothering with any sensible discourse about the actual issues at stake.

As far as the worst drivers go, I'd probably have to nominate groups of young male dole-bludging surfies in pick-up trucks. The group Allister mentioned, and Surfside bus drivers follow closely (mind you, tailgating doesn't really bother me all that much ).

I too find hugging a tree to be quite rewarding.

Cab drivers on cell phones. We have quite a few of them up here. They are always the ones who try squeeze by you. Even if there isn't the room. Irritates the crap outta me.

After I posted this yesterday, on my way home from work I was almost run over by one of my neighbors while he was backing out of his driveway while talking on a cell phone.

I've had more close encounters with pickup trucks than any of the others. Less than a year ago a cyclist in our area was killed by a 70 year old man driving a pickup truck while dialing his cell phone. He never saw the cyclist and there were no skid marks to indicate he tried to stop. No citations were issued because they said the driver was incompetant. His family said he had other traffic incidents prior to that but they did nothing to stop him from driving.

A few weeks ago a friend was hit and badly injured by a pickup truck during a bike rally. The driver was speeding and passing on a hill in a no passing zone. Again the driver was 70 years old and there was no citation issued because they said he was not in his right mind!

A month ago while riding with a group of my friends a pickup truck pulled up behind us and started hitting the gas and the brakes simultaneously while honking his horn. He missed my friend by about 6 inches. He also appeared to be in his early to mid 70's.

While I wouldn't say that p/u drivers are worst as a class (still think that award goes to smallish women on cellphones in Escalade/Tahoe/Excursions), my ugliest confrontations have been with the drivers of pickups.

One morning at about 6:15, I was riding along a levee road. My only escape route was into the Sacramento River so I was taking the lane. A pickup roared by me and his sidemirror just missed my elbow. I could see his eyes in his rearview mirror and I sat up and held my hands about 3 inches apart. He slammed on the brakes, waited for me to ride up, and screamed at me, calling me a f-ing moron and that I should ride on the bike path.

Ignoring the whole bikepath issue, Dude, it's not even 6:30 a.m. and we're the only two vehicles on the road and you can't give me 3 feet?

Punk.
