New bike enthusiast needs help with bike selection

My friends and I are looking to get ourselves into mountain biking. Living in Ohio, the metroparks and the Rocky River valley area are perfect with trails throughout. However, I'm having trouble finding a bike. I don't know where to start. While looking at classifieds on the internet, I don't know how to judge what size bike I need, or what the item even is. Any help appreciated.

I don't know what city you're from, but I live in Columbus and purchased the most inexpensive Trek hybrid to get me started. The guys in the store were helpful and suggested a bike based on the kind of riding I told them I wanted to do, and they also sized me for frame size. I'd recommend going into a bike shop to at least get some ideas, whether or not you buy from them in the end.

The easiest place to start is at one of our many local bike shops, Century (my preference), Eddy's, Ohio Bicycle Coop, etc. See what they have, take some test rides, ask questions to your heart's content, report back here with any questions you can't get answered to your satisfaction.

I'm from Lakewood, so I'm familiar with Century. I'll probably visit them soon to get help with what size bike I should invest in.
