I'm going to be moving across the country. I need a bike rack for my hatchback, however, there is lip coming out from top of the hatch, therefore making it hard for me to find a bike rack that doesnt need a strap coming from above it. Anyone with any advice?

I am in the same dilemma as you with a bike rack. I am debating between a roof rack and a trunk rack. If you are on a budget, performance has a full roof rack for roughly $185 after shipping and a 10% off coupon.

I do not know how reliable these mounts are. I am on the college student income so I have to go with cheaper. Does anyone have any advice on this rack or what type of rack to go for. Anyways, I hope this helps you out some. Good Luck

thanks for the reply! i actually am not doing well financially, and am moving, which is why i need the rack. its only temp as i ride every where in the city, so i just need somthing cheap that will work with my car for the trip

How much does it cost to box it up in a bike box & have it shipped instead of buying a rack?

Ratdog may have the hot tip for a one time shipment. I use a receiver hitch and rack and love the setup, but, if you don't already have the hitch installed, it's a pricey setup for a one time use.

I agree that shipping the bike might be simplest. I don't know about your locale, but I found shipping a large package (an armchair) by Greyhound was cheaper than the postal service or UPS/Fedex etc. a couple of years ago.

For the car, a trailer-hitch rack is the best option, if you intend to keep using it. You can get a hitch mount fairly cheaply attached to the car by U-Haul or their agent (after all, the more cars with hitches, the better for their trailer business), and I understand there are even some do-it-yourself hitch attachments. Get a rack that swings down or to the side to allow access to the rear hatch.

How far are you moving?

If it is a fairly short distance (a single day drive or less) I would be tempted to figure out how to tie it to your roof... Perhaps removing one pedal and the front wheel, wrapping it in a heavy blanket to protect the bike and car and tying it with a piece of rope... You may haveto keep the windows rolled down or something, but it could be possible.

Saris bones rack -- they claim it works with just about any car/hatchback, including those with spoilers/lips. I've actually seen someone Worth taking a look at their web site to see what you think. You'll probably need an adaptor to make it work with a glass hatch, but they are nice, sturdy, well-built racks. Not the cheapest, but very easy to work.

I am not sure how reliable the trunk racks are but you can but the ones at wal mart for 30 bucks and some more reliable ones for about 50 or so bucks on ebay. I would really research the trunk ones though. There was a thread on roof racks vs trunk racks. Ill find it and post it after this post.

Me personally, I would purchase some type of bike rack. It is going to run you in the ballpark of 50 to about 100 bucks to packege and ship the bike properally. For that amount of money, I would buy a rack b/c you can reuse it over and over. That is just my 2 cents on it. This is a really helpful link that I read the other day.

I'm going to side with ratdog. Boxing and shipping your bike will cost around $100.00. That may sound like a lot, but if you screw up your car's paint job it'll cost considerably more than $100.00 to fix and you'll curse yourself every time that you look at it until it's repaired. Shipping's the cheapest way.
