Gave away my bike

Bye bye old friend. Circa 1981 brown Ross Professional steel 10 speed I've owned since new. For several car-less years it was a main source of transportation. Haven't ridden it for a few years; it had become too beat even to serve as a beater, and I figured there was no point in it continuing to take up space in the garage (where there are 7 more bikes, 3 of them mine). I was going to put it out on trash day, but while it was sitting in the driveway one of the lawn guys asked if he could take it. Sure. Very good.

That must have been a sad parting. I hope you were strong, so that it would be easier on your old bike...hopefully he/she is going to a good home and a faithful rider.

That lawn guy probably makes so little money he has no car for personal use. That bike may enable him to get to a better job. I have given two bikes away like that.

I know just what you're talking about, I was happy for him to take it, but the wheels were in dangerous shape and the drivetrain was quite worn out so I doubt it was any big favor to him. Frame was fine.

Our department accumulates a bunch of junker bikes each year, mostly abandoned by the students. (I'm in "campus" law enforcement) We have to keep 'em for a year, then we give 'em away. Last bunch went almost entirely to the contract grounds guys, and I see these folks riding in to work each day, regardless of weather.

You never know. That lawn guy might be a bit of a mechanic or might choose to become one. Regardless, replacing a couple of wheels and a drive train is undoubtedly cheaper than buying a whole new bike. You might have done him quite a favor.

I HATE throwing away old bikes. I always try and give them away first. And I'm still cursing the day I gave away my 1976 Nishiki Competition.
