Real life

Seems to be more then our share of snobs{i could use a few different words**in cycling. Are they like that in reall life or just the opposite?

DannoXYZ 04-26-06 10:18 AM

Nah, they're out there in real-life as well...

tulip 04-26-06 11:04 AM

Just stay out of the Road Bike forum and you'll be okay.

supcom 04-26-06 11:11 AM

There are snobs everywhere. Some of them ride bikes.

chipcom 04-26-06 11:12 AM

I'd respond, but an 05 Roubaix Comp Double is beneath me.

DataJunkie 04-26-06 11:14 AM

If you do not know any snobs, you are said snob.

+1 on this advice!

colinm 04-26-06 01:10 PM

I lock up my $25 framed bike next to ti and carbon here at work. I know 2 of the guys, they know me. I say "Hi", they don't.

What's it all mean? *weep*

Portis 04-26-06 01:24 PM

I dunno. Despite the fact that I ride every day, have logged nearly 20,000 miles in the last couple years, and am consumed by cycling. I have hardly ever seen a cyclist. Nor do I have any desire to. :)

I am a roadie and I spend the vast majority of my time in BF in the road cycling forum and I must say that, while I wish this was a joke.....it isn't. I have found that, in general, the cycling community is a rather friendly one...as long as they are not talking about their bikes or riding prowess (neither of which, in my case, are much to brag about).

Well I DO like my bike:D

Cheers,

Brian

My suggestion, ignore ORP's no matter where they pontificate. Unless you are one of the chosen cyclists.

ORP =Obnoxious Roadie Persuasion

Bockman 04-26-06 04:07 PM

I have yet to meet a 'snob' who was not burdened with insecurity and self-doubts. Food for thought,

Dave

Now i've not heard that one before, orp.

Boudicca 04-26-06 05:41 PM

My name's Cea and I'm a roadie.

Does that make me a snob?

Not at all.The snobs are those who pass value judgements on other cyclists based on Roadie "performance" metrics of speed, milege logs, equipment weight, compliance with OCP standards, etc.

That's because I just made it up. Seems to fit though, doncha think?

Jerseysbest 04-26-06 09:19 PM

yeah, I like how the roadie's make fun of the 'knaves' so much...

In every hobby, sport, or what ever, there are snobs. Beer snobs (American beer?), tea snobs who never bag it, car racing snobs (don't get me started), computer snobs (god, every Apple user is so pretentious!)

gritface 04-26-06 10:08 PM

And why do the snobs seem to come out only in the summer? The percentage of waving-back cyclists in the winter is much higher.

Dead give away of cycling snobbery and pretentousness? Using the terms "serious," "true," or "real" to describe themselves or their type of cycling. Not only roadies are afflicted with this condition, but those of the Obnoxious Roadie Persuasion seem to predominate.

The percentage around here is about the same for me all year. I never see other cyclists to begin with:D .

shokhead 04-27-06 07:54 AM

Am i a snob if i say,you only ride 100 miles a week? I do 1K aweek so i wouldnt use your tires.
I wouldnt use carbon,i ride to hard for that.
Telling a non-cycling friend, hey i did 42 mph on my bike this weekend. He didnt tell him he only cycled 10 miles for the weekend,he got tired.
Walking into a lbs and pointing to the most $$$ bike and saying,i'll take that one.

Baggsy 04-27-06 08:30 AM

I notice almost every motorcycle rider will wave, but only a select few on bikes, roadies or otherwise. Seems the mountain bikers are good about waving, but the high falootin' new commuters in their Brooks Brothers suits and a hybrid comfort bike this spring...they're either real snobs or afraid to lift their hand to wave...

I vote for the latter. Ha, what a hypocrite I am...I am more apt to give a nod of the head than a wave, unless it's a gal, who then always gets a tip of the hat and a 'howdy ma'am'.

Wow! You've got high falootin' commuters in Brooks Bros suits in your neck of the woods? We sure don't have any here. Not in Brooks Bros anything, not even Brooks Bros bib overalls. Come to think of it I seldom see another bike cyclist at all; new, old or even low falootin'.
