third, uh the rear wheel is wobling like crazy after the cleaning, yes i took it off, so i need help
Is the hub ok. remove the wheel turn the axel. is it wobbling? if so repack, you will need special tools and some ability to do it yourself. Is the axel set in the fork? re set the wheel push down on the bike, look at it. does iot look ok. tighten the bolts. Is the rim close to a perfect circle if that is the problem the wheel will have to be trued. You can probably do it your self with a spoke wrench. It is also possible that the tyres are the problem. How do they look. |
I don't know what the bike is worth (in general or to you) but for your stem issue I would turn the bike upside down and pour some penetrating flud (Liquid Wrench, WD-40 or whatever your favorite is) into the steering tube to try to free up the stem bolt.
Add fluid, let it sit for a few hours, add more, let it sit a few more hours... It may not be quick, but it may work. |
re: rear wheel being "wobbly"--it may just need to be trued. if there is an lbs in your area, check w/them or post on the "mechanics" section of this forum.
re: the tires, if you are going to ride on the road--find some cheap "slicks" (that is what they are called in the US). the size you need is listed on your current tire. I saw that you also have another thread re: new bike. i'll post thoughts there re: that idea. |
I was looking for some penetrating oil but didnt find any, i cant realy read finish, but yeah ill keep looking and try to lossen it up that way. so, thanks
it could be the hub i took it apart and everything, real messy, but its not wobbling up and down (vertical) its like waving a bit side to side and not the whole wheel, i know because i can see it and when i set the brakes right (real close) it rubs against them like every revalution... well i realy dont need to open up that hex bolt (stem bolt, you called it?) but ill try any way i took it out for a rid today (15k) and it was all ok, but i got tune the front and rear derailers like there not super smooth and i gota lube up the chain... i got "chain oil" comes in a little bottle with a pointy funnle... when i get the chance i take the rear wheel off and check the hub... and what kind of feed back can you give on this bike from the pics... what whould you change and why... and if anything looks missed place (or missing) please tell, because i took it all aprat and forgot were some bolts went... but i fit them some were i thought was right. and i dont have any left over parts from the build so there all on the bike. oh and thanks EDIT: oh and that seat its great im thinking of like the seat stick thing but with a damper in it... like suspention (sp) what do you think? |
i would like to add that im planing to make this my commuter (what i use to get around), and i would like advice on what it needs, and what i should carry around, and i dont what some on jacking all the parts off it niether...
plans: new gear cables re done rear hub (internals) more cleaning and lubing getting some new pedals large Al ones oh and the 20w/35w halogen light combo you see on the total geekiness forum if i find a brake alternative that would be nice maybe totaly new wheels (gota check prices)::: see how the rim looks black?? its not suposed to be black::: ill see what i can do with the front end... you guys thing i can fit shocks/ or at least a new fork and stem? i gota read up on that too (how to change front end, any one wana link me?) new front (compatible) derailer new chain best of all, foot stand lol i need to find a sturdy/stable foot stand how much you think i should spend on somthing like this? i mean like 200eu could get me a better bike...but then people who have riden my bike like how it rides and are in aw that it rides so nice... and they all love that seat... what do you think? what would you do with this bike? |
and ideas what kind of handle bar is gona suit me best? comfort +speed? the on i have now it great buy i want CHANGE i like CHANGE... link me up with some pretty cool ones that arnt gona cost me 50$ (less please) lol...

Your rear wheel needs the be trued. Check your rear spokes, especially the ones on the side with the gears and make sure one of them isn't broken.
If you get a hex bit for a 3/8" socket wrench, you may have better luck loosening the stem bolt. After you loosen it, you will probably have to tap it down with a hammer to free up the wedge at the bottom of the stem. As suggested already, turn the bike upside down and spray liberally with WD40 and let it sit several hours (overnight) first. You should repack the wheel bearings, steerer tube bearings, and BB bearings. all that is normal maintenance and should cost you nothing more than a tub of grease from any auto parts store. Get new tires and new brake shoes. If the bike shifts and stops fine, keep riding it. What's wrong with your current handlebar? I wouldn't put much money in that bike. Your handlebar looks fine. |
To be honest, the price of a new set of grips might be too much to spend on this bike. The bike just isn't worth put a lot of time, energy or, certainly, money into. I know you might like the bike. It may even have some special meaning to you but it just ain't worth the effort. You have a sow's ear here. Considering that you can get an okay bike for $250 to $350, pouring $100 to $200 into this thing is not a wise investment.
Get a new bike, strip the parts from this one and put them in a box. In 10 years throw the box and outdated parts away. That way you won't feel like you wasted your money. |

i have a similar bike to the OP. An old Huffy MTB I got from an LBS way back in the day. (back when Huffy bikes were still OK) I've got about 80 bux in it with new tires, brake pads, saddle, new pedals, and a new crank arm. I'm in the process of tuning up the deraileurs. I don't plan on riding it anymore as I just got a new trek 7.3 fx, but I'm planning on giving it to goodwill or something. I know I've spent too much money on a bike that isn't worth it, but I just wouldn't feel right giving a bike away that wasn't fit for someone to buy and ride right away.

i busted open the rear hub... coudnt get the axle out. i think i need to get the shimano key thing cause theres somthing in there thats not letting it out... i can see it, its an onther cone nut... and since i dont think i can get a new axle should i go with a new rear wheel??? also if i do get it should i set it up my self or let the no so loacal LBS do it? i understand NOT to spend any money on this. so ill try not to...
so the rear wheel? ill check it out but i doubt anything is broken (spokes)... i want this to be a comuter, or more like i want a comuter nad this is what i got and im planing on getting a MTB from kona witch is gona set be back a 1000eu... if you have any better ieas please tell, also ill look around for a quality used bike.... |
