Preventing Scalp Tan

Each year I get a funny looking tan on my scalp due to my helmet.

SPF50 has not made a difference already this year.

Can anyone suggest how to prevent this without adding too much heat?

Coolmax skullcap.

Yep.

As per my post on cycling caps. This one is a stretchy coolmax mesh.

No. I can't. It would be rude and unfair to those people out there who are...um...challenged (he says as he runs his fingers through his thick, luxurious, curly...Oh just look at the avatar;) )

foehn 05-02-06 04:19 PM

Hey dude, it don't look all that thick an' luxurious. Lets see it longer, in a month or two.

Just think of all those grams I'm savin' for free! :p

Just show the tan lines with pride!

I use one of those lycra do-rags under my helmet.

It also comes in handy for scuba diving. I don't like to wear a hood, and sometimes there's a long surface swim after the dive.

And yes, I am SEVERELY follically challenged and a redhead!

Now if I can just get rid of those circular tans on the back of my hands...

For my multi-day tour last summer, I wore a synthetic skullcap under my helmet, the kind with a flap for the back of the neck. Not only was I more comfortable, it also provided excellent sun protection.

Mind over matter. Imagine yourself with a full head of hair.

My Hair Union was threatening to strike, so I fired them all. Buzzzzzzz.....

I might have to get a skull cap myself, sometime.

lrzipris 05-03-06 09:51 AM

I call this phenomenon "male pattern sun burn." My answer: Coolmax cycling caps, with the brim, or skullcaps, without.

That was taken (by me) two weeks after a hair cut, on the Katy Trail after 60 miles of riding in Missouri heat with a helmet on. It was kinda smooshed:) You should see it now. Think Albert Einstein except it ain't white.

Maybe Medusa...people have been kind of stoney around me lately:D

I thought it looks pretty cool. I shave my head and in the summer with my Giro Atmos helmet I get tribal-like looking tanlines. Makes you look hard-core. :D

DataJunkie 05-04-06 02:12 PM

I shave my head due to an inverted mohawk. Okay...I'm balding. Or bald is more like it.
If the tan lines appear I will throw a handkerchief under my helmet as a doo rag. Been practicing on my 2 year old son. Too bad it usually ends up looking like a pirate. :p
