Backpedaling just seems like wasted motion
I just want to know why some riders backpedal. I never do. And Im not sure why I don't. It kinda seems a little silly. Anyway, I'd like to hear from those that do peal backwards: WHY?

I pedal backwards when I'm riding fakie, but I don't really have a choice, the bike just pedals me.

I do it sometimes when coasting to just give my legs a different feeling, seems to help refresh them more than just letting them hang. It may also be psychological rather than physicial. Since I am putting almost NO pressure against the pedals I really don't think I'm wasting any energy in a meaningful sense.

I do it during spin workouts, just to get the muscles working differently. I'll do it on a descent after a climb; I think it helps flush the lactic acid. Helps them feel better than doing nothing....

If you want a road answer, only when preparing for a track stand at a light or to reposition my feet for a hop.
The Mtn Bike answer is all the time for maneuvers but never more than about 180 degrees.
If you mean around and around backwards then never.

Retro-nerd
I ride a bike with a low BB. Sometimes I peddle backwards to get to position the pedals for a turn. Also, when moving fast and coming to a stop at an intersection I find that pedaling backwards helps me keep balance as I stop.

Those listed above and also: When I want motorists to notice my pedalling motion and either re-think their pass or, more often, simply note the reflective bits on my shoes and understand whats on the road ahead.

Back pedalling - WHY? unless you are positioning the pedals.

All you all coasters... Bleah.
I backpedal to go backwards. Or exert force backwards when the pedals are going forwards to slow myself down.
Fixies are fun!
MacG had a bike for a while that was a retro-direct or something like that where it was two freewheels and a weird floating cog. If he pedalled forward, it was one gear, backwards was the other. It was kind of nuts...

I do it on the MTB while coming to a stop for fun, Then to balance at a track stand while waiting for a light change.
