All alone

Here it is 3:20 AM in the central United States, and I'm all alone on the Bike Forums, except for Joe Gardner, who's probably doing something incredibly technical and geeky to the software.

Insomnia rules! And I don't mean that kindly. But what's there to do....

If I lived in a sleepy little village like Mark (the Flying Dutchman) from Schermerhorn, I could hop on my bike and take a ride in the cool night air. But if you could see what the streets in my neighborhood are like after dark, you'd stay indoors, too....

In about two hours, the first gleams of daylight will begin to spread over the eastern sky; an hour or so after that, the trees will have that theatrical sunlight on them that you get only at sunrise.... And will I hop on my bike then?

If experience is to be trusted, I'll probably hop into bed, instead.

I hope I'm not a vampire and don't know it. *

Too pitty JonR, yesterday it rained the whole night, so the little "hot summer night trip" didn`t work out.
Mmm, its now about 23 hours later and it still rains, maybe tomorow its better?
Good night everyone,

Well here it is the next morning, 5 AM, and just me on the forums again. I'm going to do what I did yesterday--it was successful.

I just stayed up, looked up the time of sunrise and stepped out on the porch to see if the sky lit up--it didn't, but about an hour later it did. Then about 7 I put my overdue library books in my Giant Igauana's panniers and rode off to the City Market where I had coffee and a "Hearty Italian Sandwich" (grilled) at the City Market Coffeehouse. Yummy!

Then on south to Westport and though I wondered about lugging ten pounds of books up the three-quarter-mile (1.2-km) Hospital Hill, I think it was the easiest ride up the hill I've ever had, including years past.

The day may have been the most perfect for cycling I've ever experienced: about 55 degrees, light breeze, gorgeous but not blinding sunshine, very little traffic (resulting in easier breathing), just a joy to be out on a bike.

I did get a fair case of Hearty Italian Heartburn on the way home, but that happens no matter what I eat. Had to stop once and rest on a series of hills in the home stretch, but that's OK.

Today, I intend to take my road bike out. If weather permits. Last I looked, they said 80% chance of thunderstorms!

Well, it's raining in Kansas City as well as in Toronto, the Netherlands, and everyplace else people need to be riding their bikes today. I got caught up on my sleep (with my cat, who does that kind of thing very well) and now I have to decide whether to be tough, as Mark suggests, or grumpy and give Orguasch some competition. It's a good thing I'm not a cook!

I don't mind riding in the rain and getting wet, but I don't feel I can afford to get my bikes wet too much, because they might get damaged and I wouldn't be in a position to get them fixed. I had to have the bottom bracket replaced on the mountain bike when I was commuting, because it got completely rusted out. Now it's got a sealed BB but those things aren't foolproof either. And I can't just get a new one like I used to.

Well, if it lets up I might go out anyhow.

Mark, I'm sorry you couldn't get your provisions! I know what it's like to open the refrigerator and need sunglasses to look inside because it's empty and there's nothing but glare....

Well, no rain here, but yesterday was very windy, and today it's a little calmer, but still pretty strong gusts; actually 15 knots this morning, and 20 to 25 now. I did venture out yesterday evening and plan on riding this afternoon. I guess if it's hard work, a person just gets stronger, right?
