Anyone know where a person can buy trays(only)

I'm in the process of designing and building a two bike rack system for mounting our bikes upright inside a new vehicle we just got Friday. I've been looking for a place to buy just the aluminum extruded trays that are part of most fork mount systems. I do not need to buy the entire system(i.e. "steelhead"). I ONLY need to buy a pair(or a length) of the extrusion. Does anyone have any idea where a person might find such a thing? I'm about to give up and just build it out of some nice quality wood. Or if anyone has any junk laying around that I might be able to scavenge the trays off of let me know and maybe we can make a deal.

I'm not exactly sure what you are looking for but you might want to try Menards or Home Depot. You might also want to talk to a local welding/metals shop and ask them. My guess is if its metal, you would have better luck with the metals shop.

Do they need to be Yakima in particular? If not, Thule sells just the tray portion as a spare part.

No.

Was hoping to find a supplier instead of having to pay a huge markup to buy from a major rack maker. It's just a couple of pieces of weird shaped aluminum. Maybe the stuff is custom made for the rack companies and the average joe just can't buy it.

Ahhhh, now I see. Take that picture to a sheet metals shop and see what they think. It could be that they have to custom weld something for you (expensive ). Also, you may want to take a walk through the local scrap yard. The kinds of junk/treasure you can find in a scrapyard is usually amazing.

I think you might try looking for "U-channel". comes in all sizes.

Does it have to be a U shape? 2" angle iron (90 degree angle) turned on end, like a broad V would work. I'm guessing that the OP wants the wheels to fit into the channel. You will need to add pieces to make it stand up in that configuration. Just some random thoughts on a sleepless night.

You can buy U-channel or "angle iron" (in your case you want angle aluminum ). Look in the phone book under metal suppliers, if you've got one nearby they'll deal in thousands of pounds of metal at a time, but if you go back to the warehouse they'll have a pile of "drops", pieces cut off to make other orders, they'll usually sell 'em to you really cheap. It's a great way to get metal (steel and aluminum anyway, that's probably all they'll have very much of in the drops pile).

If you don't have a metal supplier, check hardware stores. It'll be more expensive there, and the selection will be more limited, but it's worth checking.

By "more expensive" I mean a 20-foot piece might run you $15 at a metal supplier, whereas a 4-foot piece might run you $10 at Home Depot. Neither one is super expensive.
