Best bike buying resources - buyers and back seat buyers

Newbies are lost and back seat buying kibitzers are as consistent as the wind. So hopefully this thread will end up listing the best of the best of the currently available resources on buying the perfect bike. Note this is not about bike A versus bike B, but how to decide which type of bike goes in box A and which in box B. Let's not focus on the technical details and prices, but rather good resources for getting the most out of the bike buying process.

Some will buy anything recommended as soon as the bug bites. Others will buy only after a long painful consideration time. Most are between those two extremes. So I'll start it off, and list some I found. If you find more good sites, please reply to this thread.

I would give *** to going to cycling events of the kind I enjoy like tours and RAAM and see what the riders are using. If I will be buying, I keep notes.

And more importantly, why say buying a cervelo vs a trek. Why did one pass the mustard and another not? {aside from LBS and color. ****
