Biking vs. Gardening

As an avid gardener and houseplant enthusiast, I have the problem of not having enough time to do everything.

With gardening, this is the time of the year when everything is being planted and weeded. I am still planting and non-stop on the weeding.

I don't get home from work until 4 and my girlfriend gets home at 8, so that gives me 4 hours to bike, garden, eat and get everything else done.

How is one suppose to balance life when there is so much fun to be had?

The challenge is to make it all fun! :D

By the way, life is supposed to be "balanced"???

I have a dream! Someday all the world will be balanced! Ruled and balanced by imbalanced (aka "cRaZy" cyclists, (who know alot about balance!)
:p

Garden on your bike.

I'm joking. I don't know. Maybe sleep less?

A bicycle powered lawnmower may help.

I actually think I am going to pick up gardening.

I love gardening...I could watch my wife do it all day long!
You are missing a valuable resource...a spouse who loves gardening more than you do! Then, depending upon your skills in the relationship, two things will happen: 1) You will have to do all the heavy work, after which, in grateful appreciation of your herculean efforts, you will be given ample time to ride your bike and recover...or 2) You will both share in the labors, get the work done quicker, then, when she goes off to work on an area of the garden that is of particular intrest to her, you can take off! Either way, a win/win situation!!
P.S. If you replace the seat on your MTD riding mower with a saddle that matches the one on your road bike, you will probably have to disable the safety switch on the mower. Just a random thought.

Gardening is good because you can grow some of the best bike food yourself.

An apartment dweller, I used to grow herbs (no, legal ones) under lights: basil, cilantro, and others that can be used in cooking, especially pasta sauce (my favorite food=pasta).

And catnip for the cat.

But the last time I tried it the seedlings got all moldy and died; this happened twice and I gave up, but I ought to start again.

The basil is great. And it's not strictly true that it's an annual. I had some plants that produced for at least a couple of years, continually. I guess being indoors made the difference.

I suggest checking out a book called "Square Foot Gardening" (author is Bartholomew I believe). It provides a very space efficient method for maximizing gardening space and virtually eliminates weeding. I've been using it for a couple of years and swear by it.

Also, mulch your garden. It keeps the weeds down and more importantly keeps the precious moisture in.
