Hancock MD bike shop
Cycled the C&O Canal last week and went to the bike shop in Hancock, spent $50. Nice shop. A few days later while taking the shuttle back to Cumberland the driver tells us that the owner won the shop. He said the former owner decided to retire and advertised for prospective owners to submit an essay as to why they would want to own the shop, along with a $250 entry fee. The winning essay got the shop and merchandise, while the owner retained the building.
I recall reading about this a few years ago and had never heard the outcome. Anyone know how many entries there were? What a deal for the winner.

Yep. That's pretty much what happened.
Don't know all the details, but I was biking through there last May and stopped in. Chatted with the new owner. He had only just taken possession a couple of weeks earlier, his wife was still in Ohio concluding their affairs there.
Last year the previous owner put the details of the contest on line. You might try a search to see if something is archived.
