Lance Armstrong Exonerated in 1999 Tour de France Doping Probe
May 31 (Bloomberg) -- Lance Armstrong was today cleared of taking banned drugs at the 1999 Tour de France by independent Dutch investigators who blamed anti-doping authorities for misconduct in dealing with the U.S. cyclist.
A 132-page report recommended convening a tribunal to examine possible legal and ethical violations by the World Anti- Doping Agency in its treatment of the record seven-time winner of cycling's biggest race, Dutch lawyer Emile Vrijman said in an e- mailed statement.
French newspaper L'Equipe said in August that six of Armstrong's samples from the 1999 race showed traces of the banned hormone erythropoietin, or EPO. Armstrong denied the accusation and said he was considering legal action against the sports paper.
