bike packaging and shipping

So I bought a bike on ebay, and the seller says he/she will package it at a local bike store and ship it UPS ground. I tried searching the forum about bike shipping and got:

Shipping Bike UPS : CAUTION!

He says $40 for packaging and $50 for shipping from Texas to California. Does that sound reasonable? How are bikes usually packaged for shipping? Are they disassembled and packed in foam?

That's about right. The shop will box it up like it would have come from the factory. Generally they will build one up and save all the packing materials to box the other bike with. Don't expect it to be packed in foam. Expect the bars, pedals, stem, and seat to be removed. Expect the front wheel to be tie strapped to the frame, and axle protectors to be on the axles. Maybe some foam wrapped around some of the parts, depending on what kind of bike it is.

It varies, by a lot. One shop quoted me $40 for packing a bike. Another did it for $20. I shipped it for about $22, but a box a little too big could end up costing close to $100. 90 bucks for both isn't awful.

Tell him to do DHL and you can get the shipping down to about 30, they will even pick it up from his house too. I shipped a Klein Mantra across country from Clai for under 50 this month. I did my Trek MTB before that from cali to TX for 30

It's too bad, but I'm under the impression that he's just dropping the bike at lbs and leaving my address with them.
