How hot is too hot?

With temps expected to reach 100 and a heat index of 115-120 I think I'll probably take the day off or go for a very easy ride. Here in Minnesota we don't get this hot too often. Does anyone limit their rides at a certain temperature? Either above or below zero even?

Yes, I listen to my body...in the right conditions, even 80f can be too hot.

So if you feel you need to back down, DO IT. Your safety is worth more than braging rights or a few minutes of commute time.

I slow down and drink more water. Plus, I pay more attention to what my body is telling me.
I have not encountered a high limit to my temperature tolerance as of yet. It just doesn't get that hot here. I would guess it is somewhere around 110F. My minimum temperature is 0F. I hope to break that record this coming up winter. Maybe hit the negatives for the first time.

When temps are in the mid nineties or higher I hydrate myself before going out and drink plenty of fluids while riding. It is when I stop that the heat gets to me so I cool myself down afterwards. My mileage varies during hot days.

My minimum seems to be below 40 F. If it is below that for the daily high I ride the trainer. Maybe if I purchased one of those air warming masks I go ride in colder weather.

I was going to ride this week but now we're expected to get this heat wave that has seemed to of hit everyone else already. 100-102 with heat index 110-115. Yeah, way too hot for me! Good way to seat off weight, but, nahhh.

This time of year it's often 100 by 11AM, and still 105 at 8PM. I ride only in the morning.
Prehydrate, drink liters, PLAN your rides to include some shady spots to rest and places to refill.
It sucks. Autumn is the best time for riding here.

Since my daily commute is only around 40 minutes. The weather is not that much of a factor. There are times when the road is not rideable though.

I grew up in central Illinois and got used to the heat pretty quick. Now living in Northern Illinois the recent heat makes me remember those summers from my youth. I went out hard yesterday and paid the price with a stop after a big hill. My body told me to stop and I stopped. After about five minutes my heart rate was back to a resting level and I got back on the bike and rode a more reasonable pace given the temperature. I ended up getting caught by a thunderstorm and the wife came and picked me up. I'll ride in rain but not thunderstorms.

I swapped out my small bag for my large bag and filled it with Energy Gels and had two 24 oz. bottles filled with homemade sport drink. I refilled once with water before the storm hit.

In heat I draw the line at about ~95f. In the cold it's around -20f. I know my limitations and heed them.

I don't mind the heat as long as I have gatorade and water, but when the UV scale is high I never go out, or if it's after 6pm, I wear sunscreen 30spf+ and go.

Above 83 degrees wet bulb temp fit people have a sharply increased risk of heat stress fatalities. In the deep, hot mines in Africa men who worked around that level for long periods also had libido problems.

I'm limiting my riding to early mornings right now. We're hitting 100 almost every day lately and I'd hate to guess what the heat index is. When I was younger I used to ride in this kind of weather. I made sure to stay well hydrated and have several shadey stops available on my routes. I never tried to set any personal records or hit lots of big hills in that kind of weather, either.

Flatter and shorter routes. I'd go insane if I didn't get out at all.

Active thunderstorms and hail have stopped me so far. I work loading trailers at UPS(no fan, let alone air conditioning), so if it's cool enough to work, it's 10 times better on a bike. I've not hit a lower limit yet - though I've been considering getting a motorcycle helmet with a visor for well-below freezing. 110 heat index today, brutally hot inside. I go through a liter an hour or so until it cools down.
I ride slower in heat, and slower still when it's icy.

last year I was commuting regularly in 100+ degree heat. Secret is hydration prior to, during, and after the ride.

Prior: Water, and have a nice salty breakfast.....for me it's bacon, sausage, and scrambled egg english muffin.

during: gatorade, mix variety...go full strength with the mix.

after: water from the drinking fountain on the floor...I hit it twice in the hour, and drink until I "feel" the water.

But seriously, listen to your body....slow down when needed, and put an extra 1/2 hour onto your commute time, so you can afford to be slow as needed.

Sheesh, all winter folks biatch that it's too cold to ride, then when summer comes they biatch that it's too hot to ride. I have been catching it from my co-workers all week..."You can't be riding in this! Are you crazy? You'll pass out!" Just another indication of the wimpification of America I guess.

The human body is the perfect machine, capable of adapting to anything, only requiring the time to re-program itself into being able to handle it.

Wait until you deal with 90-100% humidity and those temps...fun times...air so thick you can hardly breathe it....now that's a bad commute.
