Very sad: Indiana Police officers/cyclists killed during cycling event

At least two police officers were killed during a cycling event in Indiana today. Several others were injured. A semi crashed into the riders' support vehicle, which in turn crashed into the cyclists. They were doing a fund raising ride for the families of officers killed in the line of duty.

Please keep them and their families in your prayers.

From the article:
>>Authorities aren't sure what caused the truck to crash.<<<

Is that all they did? How about an arrest? Did they have the driver tested for alcohol?

I said it before that a motorcar is the only method you can kill a police officer and not spend a day in jail.

- a truly horrible accident... no real details, but why, oh why, did this have to happen in broad daylight under clear skies and good driving conditions?

I grew up south of there and drive that road often enough. It's a divided fourlane with full shoulders in many places and good sightlines. In good weather during daylight hours I can't fathom a good reason for this happen. That should've been a really dull ride, actually.

R.I.P. brothers.

Very sad indeed. Spencer Moore, one of the seriously injured riders, used to come into the bike shop all the time. Super funny guy and about as nice as they come. Hopefully he'll have a speedy recovery and the other families can find peace soon.

I just saw this in the morning paper. The truck hit the back of the support truck even though it had flashing lights and a big caution banner. I think the investigation is still ongoing but how do you hit a big Ryder truck set up this way? This was a horrible accident.

Condolences to the familly.

"how do you hit a big Ryder truck set up this way?"

Driver fell asleep? Cell Phone (less likely)? The accident may have been caused by just the right fender of a large fast moving vehicle hitting the left rear fender of the parked vehicle. The Ryder truck may have been idling in neutral without the brakes engaged.

In general do not hang out in front of parked vehicles on highways.

From the pictures in the paper and Television, it looks like the Truck hit the Support truck squarely. There was extensive damage to both vehicles from the impact and the impact of the support truck with the bicyclists.

Alcohol, diabetic coma or heart attack are likely causes.
