Alright. Here's a rookie question.

Actually. I'm not a rookie. But I haven't been actively biking for a number of years. I come back and discover there is an animal called a velo rider that people refer to with a sense of disdainful wonder. What is a Velo rider? And what's so special about it?

The term 'velo' comes from the word 'velocipede', which in turn is a highfalutin term for 'bicycle'. A velo rider is a cyclist.

Yes Velo rider seems to be an alternate to bike racer. As to why the distain in any group of racers I have gotten to know I have always found a few who do not know when to turn off the competative aggression. These few often bad-mouth anyone who is not part of their immediate social set. About as mature as the in-set at a High School dumping on the nerds.

Now the term "Land Strider" does deserve distain.

Actually, I'd like to see a "sticky" that is a glossary of bike terms and acronyms. Especially acronyms. I've been riding for a long time, but the internet seems to have created a cycling language of abbreviations that I missed out on.
