Bikes on a train?
 

Can you take a bike on Amtrak? i.e. not disassembled in a box.

Some trains, yes! In Oregon and Washington the Amtrak Cascades has a bike rack in the baggage car, the bike hang on the wall of the car by the front wheel, no charge for the bike. Check with Amtrak in your area and see which trains offer bike racks.

It depends on the route, the train and the stations. Some trains have racks, others will take the bike as baggage in a special Amtrak bike box. The box is $10 (or free if they have a used one). It's big enough that you just need to remove the pedals, turn the bars and roll the bike in. If it is taken as baggage, then both your start and end stations must have baggage service. Get a good compact folding bike for your commutes on public transportation like trains, buses, taxis, even planes. Depending on the mode used, you could use a 16 or even a closer to a regular bike feel 20 inch wheel size. I have 2 (one 16 inch and one 20 inch) for my commutes in crowded commuter trains and buses. I have the option of not fighting for precious space in the regular non-folding bike storage area. I keep the bike with me at all times. Now that is true freedom!
