Smokers: A Proposal For The First Annual Bike Forums SmokeOut

While reading this thread an idea that has occurred to me several times lately popped up again: An annual BF Smokeout for those of us still struggling with nicotine use.

I propose September 16th, 2006 for this years smokeout. That means that come Friday night at midnight you're done, that's it, no more. No more smelly clothes, no more stained fingers, no more smokers breath (my wife may actually kiss me again), no more gasping for air riding up that brutal climb, and you might even live longer.

I think it would be easier to quit as a group, maybe keep a thread going on our experiences and trials quitting. Sort of a group support thing.

What do you think?

won't work. artificial deadlines like new years, or smoke outs don't work. people quit when they have to.

It's all attitude

I know at least three people that have quit smoking (and stayed smoke free) during the Great American Smokeout.

Like most things in life, it just depends on how positively you approach it. If you typically have a negative attitude then you can probably expect a negative outcome.

More people have told me they quit when the price went up than for any other reason, and I've asked a lot of exsmokers about this. The others have all had their reasons, and support is a key factor. If they can get the support here, why not try it?

Worked for me. Quit on New Year's Eve two and a half years ago.

Hmmm...I'd have to put in a request for work, but it has been one of my goals since i've gotten the bike. Hell..it was part of the reason i got the bike in the first place. I live in Brea Ca, so where did you have in mind? I've cut down quite a bit (was up to a pack a day and that scared the sh*t out of me, down to a pack every 2 weeks or so) so maybe this can be the final nail in the coffin (For smoking i mean! not me!) hehe.

Surprised

I just can't believe that anyone contributing to the Bike Forum smokes?! Actually, after riding RAGBRAI this year, I was surprised to see the number of smoking cycling (tobacco, not the variety riding fast).
