shammy! shammy! shammalamadingdong

When I first started riding last year I had to ask a coworker how to pronounce it. Cute little roadie.
Anyhow, she also told me how to pronounce sugoi and descente. I promptly forgot those two.

That is one moronic statement. Chamois isn't exactly a standard english word.
I suppose you harp on emigrants who can't say letters like "s" or native english speakers who can't figure out how to pronounce french words?

Agreed... If you pronounced Chamois in standard english translation it would NOT be pronounced correctly. English isnt exactly a standard language with hard and fast rules for pronunciation. Im sure SlowandSteady has never mispronounced anything before.

The French pronunciation would be something like "shah-MWAAH" (with "ah" being the vowel in "father"). Many English speakers say it more like "sham-WAH" (with the vowel in the first syllable being the vowel in the word "back").

And yes, I have lived in France and can actually speak, read, and write French near fluently, so I know what I'm talking about.

I don't remember ever having this conversation.

I will admit to using the american pronunciation, but that's just because I never actually thought about it being a French word. Hey... I'm from Texas... You should see how my friend pronounces Les Misérables.

I don't think it's a dumb question. I'm a French major and "panniers" is properly pah-nyae NOT pan-yers. But, I imagine one would sound silly not saying pan-yers in an LBS.
