    Brooks saddle springs is ride softer with use?

    I'm a happy B17 user, but decided to try out a Brooks Flyer for my new folding bike. The springs were stiffer than i expected, and i didn't detect much shock absorbtion. Do the springs need a break-in period like the leather does?

    No they stay stiff. The City/Touring models have softer springs.

    Like overload springs on a truck, they seem to come into play on major bumps and potholes.
    Some people are like a Slinky ... not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.

    I have a B72 and I don't notice the springs at all.

    I don't notice the springs, either. When the day comes that I don't notice the saddle, I will know it's completely broke in. It's getting there.

    The saddle would rock if the springs were too soft. They just take the edge of the sharp jolts.

    I have a Team Pro, a Champion Flyer, a Champion Special and a rare Colt. The Colt is the only one I ever think about, and that's because it hurts. I'm going to put it on eBay one of these days.

    The springs on the B66/67 and Flyer saddles are .093" gage wire. Very stiff.
    The springs on the B73 (a triple coil saddle) are .084" gage. Smooth and supple.

    For the relatively small difference in thickness, there is a huge difference in suppleness in the B73.

    I changed out the springs on one of my 67's for the softer ones on the 73. Very nice and no noticeable rocking action. I may order another set of 73 springs from Wallbike for the other 67. I think they run about $18/set. The thinner gage really smooths thing out.

    The B72's "springs" are that in name only. If you want springs look at the B66/67, B73, B90 et al.
    I didn't necessarily want springs. I just needed a wider saddle and the B72 is just the right width. Gosh darn birthing hips! I had a B17 then switched to the B72 because of some tailbone area pain(soft tissue, not bone) that actually started with a cut-out gel saddle that was way too narrow. It just never went away with the B17 even though everything else felt so much better.

    The pain is now gone with the B72, but the B17 actually seemed to flex MORE than the B72. Doesn't really make any difference to me, but I did find it interesting.

    If you'd rather not have springs and are willing to wait a few months, the B-68 is on it's way. I've never had children, but I've got the wide sit bones all the same.

    Looks like a good product fit for the market niche. That top is supremely comfortable.

    That looks just like the top that my B33 has. If you are riding upright, then it will be a supremely comfortable top, and quite wide. One may have a problem with it "cutting" into the back of your leg with less upright riding positions.

    Looks identical to the B72 except the loop (so-called) spring of the B-72 is replaced with an unlooped "spring". And the mounting to the post is different. I'd expect the same feel from both. And I like the B-72. See my currently retired 35 year old B-72.

    Yeah, I wish they had a Team pro in extra wide or something. I need a wide saddle 210mm or so and need to be able to lean forward. There just isn't something like that in existence.

    One can have your Brooks chopped into exactly what you want. Here & here are a few examples of butchered Brooks.

    Yes, I was about to suggest the same approach. In fact, if one were so inclined, a double lacing might bring the skirts of a B66/67 or a 72 in close enough to thin out the peak considerably, leaving the wide seat area unchanged.

    Yeah, I thought about chopping or lacing too. I am just not sure what it is about the team models that make them less cause less perineum pressure. Anybody know??

    I am fine on the hoods, but being on the aerobars causes some pressure. Also, on rides of less than about 4-5 hours I am fine, but really long rides do cause the saddle to cut into my legs. I am sure losing more weight will greatly diminish this...time will tell.
