How long is to long to wait for a bike?

So how long past the time it was promised? 1 month, 2 months?

I'd say a 1 week grace period then you have every right to become a legitimate PIA to your LBS. If you've ordered online, call & e-mail daily. If 2 months have passed from the time you were given for a due date to receive your bike that's just plain unacceptable. Your LBS should happily refund your money or give you a nice price break & / or some serious "freebies" & maintenance plan.

I'd say get your money back & find another bike shop.

It depends on the bike. Is it a custom or a made-to-order build? I had to wait 6 weeks for my bike to be built but I knew that going in. What expectations did the shop/manufacturer give you?

Well, first I dont want to imply any wrong doing yet. Im just wondering what might be an acceptable limit past the time promised. I ordered a 15" Rockhopper Comp Disc on 7-22. I was told it would be 1 month till it gets here, although the guy said since its Specialized he would give them an extra 2 weeks. Its past that already by a week and a half. I emailed the shop Saturday (8-09) asking if they could find something out. They said they would do it Monday (11th) and let me know. Ive heard nothing...That was the first time Ive asked anything of the status of the order. This Saturday will make 3 calender weeks over due with seemingly no interaction at all. I will send 1 more email, and if I get nothing back Ill go in person and cancel the order I guess.

Just in case i have to cancel, what else is comparable to a Rockhopper for $1000.00 if I cant find another dealer that sells them? Thanks, really!

Go into the store. Tell the guy to get on the Spec. website and check the availability list. It is not to hard for them, but you are more likely to get results if you are in person. I know I give more priority to people that I can talk to rather than the 100+ emails that come in each day.

You probably caught Specialized sold out of 2006 models and not yet having any 2007 models. This is just speculation on my part - I could be wrong. I don't know what to tell you except that if you must choose something else, go look at Kona!

Anything past July is a crapshoot. Shouldn't be that way, but it is.

Take your money back and get something else.
I'm not the first one to say this: at any one pricepoint, they're all the same.

If Sheldon Brown starts fondly reminiscing about how much he loved riding that model, then you've probably been waiting too long.

If the LBS can no longer get spares for that model, then you've probably been waiting too long.

If the oldest mechanic in the LBS has never seen that model before except in an old catalog, you've probably been waiting too long.

If you visit the smithsonian museum and see that model as part of the "history of cycling through the ages" display then you've probably been waiting too long.

If an archaeological dig finds a fossilised version of your model, you've probably been waiting to long.

If the bikes' manufacturing process involves a hammer and anvil, or tapping rubber trees, you've probably been waiting too long.

personally, I think 2 weeks would be my limit.

You missed one...

If it's set to be delivered after rad/55's Tete gets back from the paint shop, you've probably been waiting too long.

If it's featured in "Beijing Bicycle 2" you've probably been waiting too long

That's not right. True, maybe, but not right.
