Cold air=ear pain

Ah, fall arrives...
The weather is cooler and biking in it is pleasant, however, when I bike in this weather, my ears hurt. Is this a common problem? A headband or earmuffs would cut down on hearing, I would think; what are some other solutions?

They do not cut down on hearing that much. In sub zero weather I put a second balaclava over the first one and could hear just fine. Consider those motorcyclists that use full head helmets and be thankful.

You could also consider a ski mask, but I have found that they are not to friendly to glasses if you wear any.

+1 on the balaclava. I'll even wear one in 40 deg F weather. They make me look official, and they block the wind from whistling in the ears. I have trouble with stiff knees if I cycle in shorts in cold weather, even 50 deg F, so I wear long cycling pants.

My fall/winter solution to further ear damage after a tumor messed with the left one.

I use a thin headband. I think it's made from lycra. Only when it's below freezing. It actually seems to help hearing because it blocks out wind noise.

Try searching on the forums for "ear pain" etc. Lot's of useful info. Like a bit of cotton does not negatively affect what you can hear.

My ears have already started bothering me. If it's under 70F, with a bit of wind...I'm a newbie so I'm trying to get all this figured out, also.

I like the balaclava idea. Also, that's a pretty cool "cool weather" helmet.

Heh.

I got a lot of ear-pain walking to/from classes (2 mile/day walking) when it was sub-40F. Not "oh, its cold" pain, but "is that my cartilage freezing" pain. I just wrapped a scarf around my head into a balaclava like covering. since I usually wear a bandana while biking, I'm thinking I'll just switch to this polar-fleece headband I have that has an enlarged section for the ears.
