Trek 7.3 FX

Hello all,

Iím interested in buying a 2007 Trek 7.3 FX ($500 value). After checking and comparing the models on Trekís website, I went to a bike store in Manhattan today. Salesperson showed me a 2006 late year 7.3 FX and told me that 2006 late year models actually had the frame of 7.6 FX ($1000 value) which was better and faster.

He said that Trek had scraped off 7.6 from the frames, repainted 7.3 on them and were selling them for the same price as 7.3ís because 7.3 models were sold out this year.

He argued that late 2006 7.3 FX was a better bike than 2007 7.3 FX.

Is this true? Has anyone heard of anything like that? Thank you in advance for your response.

Sounds to me like he's trying to get rid of last year's model that they overstocked.

This sounds like a load of fooey to me, but what do I know? Trying to get rid of the old stock maybe.

I have a 7.2FX and like it a lot. I kind of wish I'd splurged a bit and gone for a 7.3.

Trek is very good at responding to email: I would ask them personally.

Id would find another store.....thats just too ridiculous to beleive.

We have a Womens Specific 7.3 and its a nice bike but that
shift system is the worst Ive ever seen. It has about 6 rides on
it and I'd like to sell it for that reason alone.

supercub 09-25-06 08:54 PM

What is bad about the shift system? I wouldn't know a good shift system from a bad one. What makes one better than the other? Just curious.

I'd run, not walk from that sales person. :D

If you can, compare the spec sheets for both years, it is possible that they downgraded some components to offset a price increase.
But I would look for another bike shop none the less.

bbattle 09-26-06 12:38 PM

The frames are the same for the entire line; the components are different. It may be that they repainted some 7.6 frames as 7.3's. My LBS sells a ton of FX's and hybrids and has a tough time getting them into the store; they trickle in one or two at a time.

My wife has the 7.5FX WSD and really likes it.

Thank you very much to all of you for your responses. I finally contacted Trek and got a quick response. Trek Tech Support said that they did not repaint any frames to sell as 2007 bikes. They also asked me the name of the store and the salesperson.

I feel much better after this forum and wish all of you a great day.

I'm waiting on a 2007 7.3 FX Disc. I put down a deposit a few weeks ago at my LBS in San Diego. They said it might be into October before they see one come in. Has anyone seen the 2007's out in a store yet?

Haha, sweet :)

The 2007 frames on the 7.3 through 7.9 models have a sloping downtube. My 2006 7.3FX has a non-sloping top tube.

Did he say that the 2006 7.3 Fx had a 7.5 frame or a 2007 7.5 frame? Either way, the part about scraping off the model number is enough for me to go to a different LBS.

I've seen the new 2007 models in stores in Manhattan, but the ones I saw had V-brakes. I didn't pay attention if they had also Dics models because this didn't matter to me much. I got myself a 2007 7.3 FX just yesterday. It's a great bike.

He said that the late 2006 7.3 FX had a 2006 7.6 frame. I called another LBS to verify it and they did not confirm it.

The shifting system that is better adjusted will be the superior shifting system.

This isn't the first time I've heard someone say the shifters on the 7.3FX suck. Being an owner of a 7.3fx, can you recommend a better system we can upgrade to?

Also, what would be the effect of a bad shifters? Currently mine kind of hesitates when I shift - sometimes I have to peddle a couple rotations before it shifts and sometimes it's not smooth.

Thanks

ScrubJ 09-27-06 08:37 PM

I have about 1200 miles on my 06 and have NEVER had a single problem INCLUDING shifting problems. I can't possibly imagine what would be the problem as Deore derailers are a pretty nice level of equipment.

The 07 models have oval tubes, different cranks, and have disc mounts.

ScrubJ 09-27-06 08:44 PM

I want to add that I own an Ultegra equipped bike, so I do know how things shift.

I just told you. Who adjusted the shifting is the biggest factor. Any index shifting setup will perform well if it is in good working order and adjusted properly.

Basicaly, the frames are identical except for the paint and decals. But the part about scraping the paint off sounds like it would make Pinocchio's nose grow real long, so I would stay away from this salesperson.

There is nothing wrong with Alivio shifters. Many of my mountain biking friends use them without problems. My 7.3 FX did not upshift properly into the 2nd chainring when I purchased it. The LBS tried to adjust it, but after I adjusted the derailleur and cable tension it has been fine.

Even my Ultegra double front derailer can hesitates now and then. For the most part, my 7.3 shifts as nice as my Ultegra equipped Masi. The derailier has to nudge the chain over to the next ring, the ring has to pick it up, things take time.

Portis hit the nail on the head with the adjustment comment.
