My son who is 8 lives with my ex wife, his best friend passed a day before my bday. California, Redondo Beach. Full story and picture is here:

http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?se...les&id=8293498

Very sad for the mother and family, who were devastated. He was not wearing a helmet, not that would have helped. I was once hit by a car, the helmet is important. My son is very upset, they were not only neighbours but also went to school together. Jeremy Perez was a wonderful kid from what I was told by the kids. I talked to him once. Its horrifying and I cannot imagine what the family have gone through.

May peace find their souls over time.

The Ryde man killed east of Vacaville on Sunday when his bicycle was rear-ended was identified by Solano County authorities as 57-year-old Robert White.

White was riding northbound on Highway 113 south of Hay Road just before 2 p.m. when he was hit from behind by a northbound Hyundai Tiburon driven by 21-year-old Taylor Boe of Orange, according to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jason Hekker.

White was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency personnel arrived at the scene, Hekker said.

The accident closed a section of the highway between Hay Road and Cook Lane for about an hour and a half.

According to Hekker,[B] Boe told investigating officers that a south-bound vehicle prohibited him from moving to the left to pass White, who authorities said was riding on the fog line at the right of the lane. However, authorities initially said witnesses did not see anything preventing Boe from driving around the bicyclist nor anything that would have caused White to swerve in front of Boe.(/B]

An on-scene investigator inspected Boe's car after the crash but said there did not appear to be any kind of mechanical issues with the vehicle, Hekker said.

Officials said alcohol and drugs were not involved in the crash. No charges were immediately filed against Boe and he was allowed to leave the scene.

Hekker said it will likely be next week before all witness statements are finalized and the CHP makes its recommendation about charges -- if any -- to the Solano
County District Attorney.

The Solano County Coroner conducted an autopsy on White on Monday and it was determined that he died as a result of "multiple injuries due to the vehicle accident," officials said.

The driver stated an oncoming vehicle prevented moving over to pass the cyclist. SO THE ONLY OTHER OPTION WAS TO KILL HIM?! Brakes are there for a reason! http://www.thereporter.com/news/ci_18985418

Typical.

Killing a cyclist is an excuse for a motorist every time they say they can't do something, when they actually can.

I had the honor of meeting forum member, Matt Wilson, who posted as hooligancyclist several times this year. He was a thoughtful young man and a strong cyclist. Matt died Friday, on his 23rd birthday, when he collapsed during a ride.

Matt was one of the youngest ever finishers of the Terrible Two double century, and completed it five times. He had an infectious smile and was one of those people who would talk to and encourage anyone, regardless of speed or ability. So sad.

Something like a tribute wall should really be a web site. And not one just using a piece of BBS software that wasn't meant for the task.

If anybody wants to get together and build one, I would be glad to help out with the technical aspects. I have 15+ years of experience doing stuff like that. It should be someone or some people who has a much better connection to the bike world than I do..

I can kickstart a design process and a collaboration setup to manage it as a group (a dedicated backend forum where its put together), and at the same time, show the other people involved what needs to happen to build a database driven site that people can add their memories of somebody to, and adapt it until its ready to go live. My goal would be to help get it started - not planning its structure out, so much as helping people get a picture of the possible ways it could be done and deciding on the best one.. and coding some of it.. (I can do it but I also don't want to force my own ools and coding style onto a project, there are lots of ways it could be done. Also, there should be lots of ways to navigate it.. by date of accident, by riders age, by location, by name..

This would be a database of bicyclists who were killed, so it has geographic data, It should contain a database of geotagged data, specifically where the injury that caused the death happened, if its available.

It should also contain as much info as is available about what happened, especially if it was a road condition or equipment failure that caused it.

It would have multiple purposes besides its primary purpose, memorializing fallen riders.. One purpose would eventually be helping improve safety. It would be smart to keep that goal in mind from the beginning. Seeing the big picture.

If the location wasn't available, it should contain their town so friends can find their page or add new ones. The different ways of navigating the data should be expandable..

It should scale well because it will eventually hold thousands of names, photos, etc.

Someone should be able to pick a state, say, and see memorials to friends and neighbors there. I especially dont think it should be corny, like Find a Grave, I think it should be a genuine effort to tell as much as people can about what a deceased friend or neighbor was all about. It should be easy to add stuff.. a photo, a reminiscence, a tribute.. etc.

It should be a Google Maps mashup that can show the location. It should also hold stuff about injured people. If someone is injured seriously while biking, they should also be included somehow. There should be a way to contact them and even to send them gifts or money for hospital bills, etc... Or to bring together friends to do so.

The process of adding people and content should be via web forms. And it should be hosted on a solid hosting provider and backed up regularly. A number of people should own the domain together and hold the passwords as a group.

One person should NOT do it, it should be a team, for lots of reasons but especially the sad but important reason that if any key person who was doing too much of it themselves died, the whole thing, ironically, might then die with them, defeating the whole point.

If you need my help, PM me. Right now I have the time, sort of, for a project like that. I myself am recovering from an illness and I need to exercise my brain in that way.. I also like the idea a lot.

An update on this story..... Taylor Boe the driver who was responsible for taking Robert White's life was to appear on Friday, Dec. 2, 2011 and plead either guilty or not guilty of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. He did not appear for this court date and currently has a bench warrant for his arrest. Meanwhile Robert's only child Angela is trying to deal with her Father's death and trying to get through the Holiday season without the physical presence of her Father. I am Angela's remaining parent. I pray that no one would ever have to go through this pain. The court info is posted at.... http://courtconnect.solano.courts.ca...in.cp_main_idx type Boe into last name area and follow.

A particularly egregious case (see article below, from local paper). Camino del Sur is my exit off of State Route-56, which is a relatively newly completed divided highway (2 lanes each way) running E-W and linking I-5 to I-15 in northern San Diego. It is almost incredible that a driver could be so incompetent as to pull a lethal stunt like this while cruising on this highway. No excuses here that I can see. If you drove along this stretch of road heading east you would be struck by how well designed this MUP is, well offset from the highway, up a significant slope from vehicular traffic and behind a tall metal fence (not that the latter buys you much ....). It is a well-used path and people thought it was completely safe ..... until this happened in the summer of 2011. I've cycled this path, it's a great way to get to the beach from where I live about 10 miles inland.

-----------------------------

A bicyclist who was killed Tuesday night when an out-of-control sport-utility vehicle careened into a bike path off state Route 56 in Rancho Peñasquitos was identified Wednesday by family and friends as Nick Venuto, 40, a bioenergy company executive and married father of two from Poway.

Another bicyclist who was struck in the accident was identified Wednesday by the California Highway Patrol as Baron Herdelin-Doherty, 51, of Solana Beach. He was named CEO and president of YMCA of San Diego County in October. Herdelin-Doherty was in critical condition Wednesday at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The driver of the 2003 Ford Escape SUV, identified by the CHP as Sheena Saranita, 27, of San Diego, was in good condition at the hospital, the spokeswoman said. She suffered minor injuries, the CHP said.

Herdelin-Doherty is married and the father of a college-age son, said YMCA spokeswoman Kristie Spalding. He is a triathlete and avid bicyclist who cycles five to seven times a week, Spalding said.

The accident happened about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday off eastbound SR-56 just past the Camino del Sur exit, west of Black Mountain Road.

Saranita was driving eastbound at an estimated 65 to 80 mph when she began to change lanes. She saw a vehicle in the far-right lane, overreacted and steered the SUV hard to the right, the CHP said. The SUV traveled up a 15-foot grassy embankment, plowed through a chain-link fence and overturned on the elevated bike path.

As the SUV overturned, it struck Venuto and Herdelin-Doherty. Venuto was pronounced dead at the scene by San Diego Fire-Rescue Department paramedics.

--------------

Still makes me sick to think about it. RIP Nick Venuto.

Keep the family of Megan Baab in your thoughts and prayers. Megan, a freshman on the cycling team of Lees-McRae College, was hit and killed during a training ride by another college student, Mitchell James Epley, who fell asleep at the wheel while driving home for Christmas. I didn't know her, but a lot of my friends did, since she grew up in this area and rode for the cycling team of one of the LBSs.

You may also want to keep the young man that hit her in your prayers too. The guilt he is feeling must be overwhelming.

The anger and sorrow expressed over this crime are fine, but perhaps we need to remind the viewers and posters of this thread that is a MEMORIAL, not America's Most Wanted.

If the police know where the driver is at the chances are GREAT that while law enforcement in his area knows about the situation. This isn't 1932. To arrest someone evidence is needed. EXTRADITION is required-agencies do not have automatic cross-border jurisdiction powers, although many have made agreement as such. It is a legal matter to do this and an agreement between several city, county and other entities may have to be secured.

I would ask that such posts as the ones recently please be directed to another part of A&S as they only tend to be inflammatory is this one.

There are many factors in the capture of an accused criminal and you cannot tell what in your opinion is the matter from a news article. That is the job of law enforcement and the justice system they are part of. We aren't going to do the job in this thread.

In Memory Of: Cyclist Memorial Statements is not an advocacy thread, it is a listing of cyclists who lost their lives doing what they loved to, as reported by persons who cared.

Please endeavor to keep it reverent.

Thank you Rollfast, much appreciated.

Hi all, if you're new here, I'm the Site Administrator. This is strictly a memorials thread. You are more than welcome, any of you, to open threads, to discuss the justice, etc. We do ask, though, that you respect the memorial aspect of this thread. I'm going to do some cleanup here.

Why weren't his parents also arrested, for harboring a fugitive?

In Loving Memory of

Robert Eugene White

March 2, 1954 - Sept. 25, 2011

Dad,

I hope you know how many lives you've touched. Your bold faith in God and your belief in something greater than yourself gave you the strength to continuously give even when you, at times, had very little. What you have taught me and many others is that you always have something to give. The need for love and compassion and the ability to give it can have profound effects that penetrate deeper into the human soul than any dollar amount ever could. A true gift to another human being is to lift them up spiritually and that is what you did for others. To know you was to be truly blessed. To be your daughter has been an honor. You have given me unconditional love and the courage to rise above and go the way of peace. As I walk through the rest of my life I know you will be with me. Go in peace dad, go continue your work, God's work, use your beautiful strength to lift those who cannot lift themselves. I wish you well on your journey. You will be in our hearts forever. I love you.

Robert leaves his daughter, Angela C. White and lots of people who love him.

May peace be with him.

There will be no formal services held.

Published in the Poughkeepsie Journal on October 4, 2011 This eulogy given by a loving daughter who misses her Father who was killed tragically killed by a driver who was not paying full attention to the road and the traffic in front of him. She needs the prayers from all who have loved ones that have the right to bicycle safely and not be killed by doing something that they love. Please pray for Angela, the power of prayer is awesome.

The truth will set you free. There is no point in taking the time to print untruths unless you have something to hide. I have the truth of a grieving daughter who lives with the pain of her Father not coming to visit her, his life tragically taken by someone driving a one ton bullet, who was not paying attention to the road ahead of him. I have the truth of the court system that states the facts of the court proceedings and who was there and who wasn't and the posting of $10,000.00 bail on Christmas Eve, from his arrest at his parent's home, for a bench warrant for someone who wasn't. My daughter has been there for all of this. The ripple effect is that she is still being hurt by this man's no show at court Dec 2, 2012. There is little to no justice for the lives of bicycle riders and the people that love them. Right now it feels as though automobile drivers have a right to kill without any recourse. Misdemeanor slap on the wrist. The victim is dead and the Family will never have their loved ones to share any part of their lives again... period. Prayers to release the pain that we experience every single day are needed and appreciated. Prayers for some form of justice for all those who lose loved ones to this senseless disobedience of the law. The truth will set you free.
