The handle bar is too cluttered, and I need a light - hopefully not over $100.00. I have a nice cateye that would fit, but not enough adjustment to keep the light from shining in the trees. If there is such a light, the function is mostly to be seen at dusk, not to examine the road surface. The latter would be great, but beyond budget.

You might try finding a Minoura Swing Grip:

Have you considered helmet mount lights?

Thanks for the thought, Stapfam, but you're right. £299.99 is just a bit over budget. The swing arm mount is looking really good, MechBgon.

Helmet mount light is probably good too, but I guess I'm not ready for the idea. Anyway, I'd hate to take a look at oncoming traffic and hit the driver right in the face.

You could try a maglite (or 2) and a 3 ft bungee cord. I do not ride much at night, when I do I Bungee cord a AA maglite to my stem. I do wrap the cord around the handlebars too. It ends up lookling like a ball where the handle bars and stem meet. It does work. The flashlight is held steady. You might be able to mount on your fork.

Maglite accessories including bike mount:

elaborate maglite setup:

Other flashlights:

Why be cheap an use a plastic lens:

Flashlight I really would like; genuine sapphire lens an AL reflector wooooo:

Geo8rge, I love you. I've been searching for a c cell maglite mounting bracket for years, and there it is. I might even get some good out of the site for the bicycle, but for the moment, I've ordered the mount suggested by MechBgon. One end mounts on the stem. The other has a horizontal bar sort of like an extra handle bar, and there seems to be an adjustable are in between. Thanks again.

It's nice to be loved. BTW, the Bungee cord thing saved me a few times when it was 7:00 I had 3 hrs to go and no light. $7 (2DD batteries, Bungee cord/duct tape/ect, Flashlight shell) at a dollar store and I had perfectly good headlight mounted. Cheap halogen flashlights, burn out if shaken too much.

I have this light which mounts on the included T-Bone stem bracket. It's inexpensive and it works well.

I have a helmet mounted light and can't stand it. Seems like a good idea, and it is...until the bugs start hitting you in the face like machine gun fire because they are aiming for the light. Just awful in buggy south jersey. Maybe it isn't an issue in the winter or in other places, but no helmet lights for me.
