Scored!

Well, Folks, it's junk week in Salem and people are pitching things they don't use anymore. I try to drive around and see if I can find any decent 'cycles and snag them before the scrap haulers get to them.
I almost didn't look at this one tied to the side of a hauler's pickup(squatter's rights?) I decided I might beg the cranks off of it from him for my clunker.

I get closer to the truck and, lo and behold, a Trek 800 in prime condition. Not even rust on the chains! Drooling heavily, I made my way around to the driver who's jawing with someone. I ask "How much?"

He says "How much you give me?"

I walked away $5.00 lighter and one bike heavier! He was gonna take the aluminum from the rims and trash the rest of it.

On a quick inspection, only minor scratches, and both tires are flat. He said some lil' ole lady had been storing it for her son. Amazing, isn't it?

you gotta make friends with the scrappers. I got my trek 800 for $2. it is now my commuter. it wasn't as great as yours. a bearing in the BB needed replaced and it had not seat or seat post. I've since replaced the tires and added my racks and lights and all my fun stuff. It is a great bike ( I think anyway) and I hope you are as happy with it as I am with mine. I'll have to post pics of mine. it's a little geeky now, but hey, I'm happy.

Looks like the front wheel bearings need replaced. Know anything about quick releases? So far the tires are holding air. A tear in the saddle and a missing handgrip (sigh). I'll probably slap the tire off my clunker on it right now and see if the noise stops.

mastershake916 Ooh a laptop! Lucky dog!

Dave80909 Get on FreeCycle and shout out what you need.

StokerPoker I know a scrapper keeps telling me to come look at the twenty or so he's got out there. Just gotta find the time...

An Update...

Ouch. Riding home last night, going to cross the road, 200 yards between cars, stomp the pedals twice... Chain Breaks! Middle of the road. Lucky I slid off the seat and smacked my chest into the handlebar. Sore sternum and pec this morning but otherwise okay. Just proves there is more than one way to get your heart going on a bike

How long until someone posts a thread here about how his mother gave his bike away?

Lucky lucky b@stard. I had some chain snappage on my freebie bike too! Went down in the middle of the road, tore my legs up. If I get another freebie, I'll just replace the chain right off.

I scored my IBOC frame on bulk pick up day in B-burg last spring. Granted just a frame and fork w/ a crappy h-bar and stem and a shot cup and cone BB. The inside of the tubes were all surface rust, but it cleaned up nice and is getting Frame Saver over the winter. Currently cobbled together as a back up commuter but it will get rebuilt over the winter. Free/cheap bikes make a day much better.

The first thing i'd do is stop riding it and overhaul/inspect/adjust the entire bike.

Anything with a drop bar is an automatic $100 in this part of the country.
