Several stories sound familiar. I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 22. (I am now 37) I think my beta cells were attacked by my own body, but anyway...
I started out on diet/meds...lasted about 6 months. Then went to insulin shots. Then stopped seeing the doctor. Moved back near home, went MTB'ing and then my wife couldn't wake me up. Woke up with firemen and ambulance folks in my bedroom. Talk about surreal... From that day forward I have been much better at seeing the doctor, testing my blood, etc. It has all become second nature. I now take a shot everytime I eat and one at bedtime. While not perfect, I am in much better control.
Since I returned to more religious cycling my weight has come down and sugars are much improved. The best advice I can give you is don't get down on yourself and listen to your doctor and your body.
While not fun, it can be managed and you can live a near 'normal' life, if you end up having this disease. Good luck.
