looking for Wheel set recommendations
 

am looking for a reasonable set of road wheels ...and recommendations?

Do you have a particular price point? $100, $200,....,$800?
Yes there is a difference between Shimano and Campy. However, others make hubs besides those two.

100-200 range
I was asking more about the casette than the hubs...does that make sense?

Slightly higher than $200 is a mavic aksium wheelset. I'm pondering it for a build I am working on.
The cassettes came seperately on the few occasions that I have purchase wheelsets. I have a fondness for SRAM cassettes. Not that I have tried many brands.

Hmm... you might be confused about the parts. The cassette is the cluster of cogs attached to the rear wheel. It sits on the rear hub.

However, the cassette is not considered part of a the wheelset. The wheel is the hub, rim, spokes and nipples.

so I guess my question is...hubs are not universal between Shimano and champagnolo( or other brands ) - correct?

In that price range (I was just looking) Mavic Cosmos or Open Pros (cheapest from Performance bike it seems) seemed to score high on message board post reviews. I ended up with Cosmos and I can only compare to Xero xr-3's and Mavic Carbones and I am happy with them so far. I didn't look at other brands, wanted to have one brand of wheels for some dumb reason.

Yes, there is a difference between Shimano and Campagnolo. Which you need depends on what shifters and derailleurs are on your bike.

If it's Shimano you need, there are web deals on wheelsets with Ultegra hubs and Mavic Open Pro rims for around $200. Campy's going to be a little harder to find at that price.

Velocity, Torelli and Sun Rangle make very good rims for less money then the more common brand companies. Check your LBS for these brands and you will be surprised.
