Scenes from a bike
Warm December day today. Small southwestern Ontario city of just 30,000 people. Five minutes to blissful country roads. Project due at 5:00 pm in New York office. Project not done by 3:00 pm. Sun goes down early these days.
F**k the project, I'm going riding.
About 5 klicks outside of town, muddy fields all around me, I see a car parked up ahead on the side of the road. Two figures in the grass strip between the shoulder and the field alternate in performing some kind of one-off, jerky motion. As I get closer it appears that they're whipping something on the ground. Two teenaged boys with goatees. And then I'm close enough to see what they're actually doing.
They've got a television set on the ground, and they're hacking away at it with hockey sticks. Christ!
To answer that age-old question that has long puzzled Americans: yes, Canadian hillbillies do exist.
