Is there a trick to seating the new cotter pin on brake pads?

I just changed my V-brake pads for the first time. Up until now I always bought the whole brake/post assembly. The new pads are on and the pin is inserted finger tight, but how do you seat it further?

If it's truly a cotter pin, you push it through all the way, then spread the ends wide with ...

You're right, if it were truly a cotter pin. The OP shouldn't have called it a cotter pin, though. But then again, if you'd ever replaced cartridge brake pads before you'd know that.

Just take a flathead screwdriver, turn it on its side, and use the flat part of the screwdriver to press the pin in until it seats properly-
