Engaged Core Question
Does anyone have any info, opinions, advice, etc, on the concept of riding with an "engaged core?" This is generally a Tai Chi concept, with some overlap with current weight training trends. In experimenting with the engaged core in swimming and running, I have begun to notice (only now and then, and in a fleeting way) or maybe suspect, that I have a untapped, or undertapped source of power in my hips. When I feel this power, I can tell that it has nothing to do with muscle strength, and supports my belief that weight training is not the key to really tapping it. Does this resonate with anyone? Or speak to some commonly known or accepted cycling concept that I am not aware of?

lots of people talk about riding clipless in order to have an efficient pedal stroke, but it's more than that. i totally believe in not just using one's core muscles, but the whole body in connection with the machine. the other disciplines i've studied are boxing and ballet, both of which tap into the power of breath and lines of energy.
I'm not familiar with what you are talking about. But I practice Aikido, and we do talk about "the center" alot. It's the spot about two inches below your navel. And all of your movement should be based on that spot.
