Okay, I'm not going to Walmart
Actually I never was, but I was considering a very low-end Roadmaster that a lBS had for around hundred bucks. After reading the many cheap/xmart bikes posts, I rethought my plan and did some more shopping.
I found a 02 leftover Ironhorse outlaw for not much more. It seems to meet my needs for a low cost very beginner bike for my wife. the lbs has a good rep, as far as i can tell and offers free service.
I don't know anything really about Iron horse, though. Anyone have any thoughts or better yet experience with this bike??

I can't do this...I do Honestly, have to say, Welcome.
LBS are trying to make a buck..but they do enjoy the addiction.
I truly hope both you and your wife enjoy many, many miles of safe fun on your bikes.

When I picked up my second bike, the road bike, I told my LBS guy that I was finally bike happy. He said "Yeah, for now." He may be right, but I am VERY bike happy at the moment. My Bianchi is a dream to have and ride. The Iron Horse looks like a good bike, but, I have become a road bike junkie in a very short time. I did 10 miles in the rain today. Boy, I hope it does not rain tomorrow. - Ted

Iron Horse makes some good bikes. Alot of bang for the buck.
They also have good customer service.
You made a good choice.

I have no experience with the outlaw but my main commuter is an IronHorse AT-50 that I re-fit with XT, fenders and a brooks B-17. I ride it every day including winter in the snow and ice. It has stood the test of time and hard use, it's one of my 7 favotite bikes. My mountain bike is an IronHorse MT-400 fit up with XTR and fat city straight blade rigid fork. It's a very effective off road bike. I would buy an IronHorse bike any day of the week, the bikes are great and the customer service is excellent.

Thanks all. A few years ago I was riding my road bike consantly. A move to the city and slightly more hectic life, slowed me down considerably. Now back in the burbs, i've been riding my road bike alot more (not as much as I'd like, but....) The Mountain bikes are to try some thing different--lots of nice trails here and to allow me to mount a baby seat on my bike -- I'm going with the Trek 4500. Want to get the little one involved early!!!
I'm going to pull the trigger soon, so any last minutes thoughts are appreciated!

Iron Horse gives some of the best value for money spent. Yes as stated, there customer service is superb unlike some companies. They are a East coast company tht has a solid rep out there. My customers have no complaints about their bikes.

There's a site called Walmartyrs that has one horror story after another about people who have been fired. It's sickening.
I purchased a ToysRUs Pacific and will start using it next week for commuting only 30 blocks each day. I'm fixing the junk bike at the moment since it was a disaster when I bought it. I have spent almost 6 hours fixing this mess and cannot get the thing to shift using the entire cassette.
I'm also starting a journal on this junk bike and will post my adventures after a four month period. Providing of couse, the bike lasts four months on the mean streets of New York City!
