Ah, Recognition At Last

I was riding home just befoe Lights On time when another cyclist past me and said Hello. I asked if I could draft. Sure. We chatted then he reached back under his saddle and turned on his blinkie. I commented that I had a strobe unit there. Then added that I had a 35 watt headlight. "Where did you get it?" At an auto parts store. He paused then asked my name. I gave it. He said, "I recognise your name from Bike Forum. I lurk there but do not post." Ah, Recognition At Last. He split at that point and I did the remaining 5 miles home.

Have any of the rest of you been recognized from your BF activities? Or had a chance met person mention BF? Or had someone mention BF to you? I do my bit to spread the word when I can fit it into a conversation.

No, but I did notice one member from Aztec, NM, about 15 miles up the road.

Rochester seems to be a little hotbed of BF lurkers. And a few posters too. I've ridden with five local BFers and PM'd with a few others. Interestingly, all of them are commuters too. Which reminds me I've been wanting to do a winter commuter get-together...

God I hope not. Of course, slowandsteady isn't my real name.

I'm neither crosseyed, nor a cricket, so I guess I'd not get recognized by anyone.

Didn't you guys just get a boatload of snow up there? I just bought a bike from Trailblazers bike shop in Victor, NY, and it took until today to get it on the FedEx truck.....

It depends on where you are. Lake effect snow is very localized. You can get an inch an hour in one place and it's sunny a mile away. I don't get out to Victor in the off-season, so I can't tell you how much snow they have there.

It has been very cold, single digits. Diesels running ultra-low sulphur fuel have had real problems. Somebody in the gov't mandated it in school buses this year, without having tested it in low temps. Schools have been closed because the buses are all clogged up with this fuel. They're bringing in emergency tankers of kerosene to dilute the stuff. I doubt FedEx has had fuel problems. I've been in traffic with several of their trucks this week.

I hardly ever see any other cyclists so the odds of running in to any that frequent BF is pretty slim. Would be cool, I guess maybe I could get recognized by my bikes which I've posted pics of a few times.

I've met quite a few BF folks, but it's all been pre-arranged (i.e. we'd discussed meeting on BF, before actually meeting) -- not the sort of chance encounter/recognition you're talking about. Funny, they don't seem any different than regular cyclists, except they're maybe a bit more tuned in on the BF in-jokes, e.g. 400W, getting yelled at, etc.
