Can anyone smell spring yet?

I'm in MAnchester, UK, and winter's a long, dull, wet, grey affair.

We had a couple of days last week where the sun was out and the evenings really felt lighter. I still couldn;t smell it, though. It's like when you go out and it's in the air. It hits you and you feel your body respond.

Anyone out there see first signs of spring yet?

I have a Tour de France DVD I've been saving for the long winter haul. I think it we might be close to the turning point, so I might watch it now to ease the winter blues and get myself in the mood for spring.

Come down South- A bit wet and a bit cold but we keep getting spells where the Cloud breaks and the sun comes out. If only we could lose that damn wind.

Down here in the S.E of England we can smell spring. The snowdrops are long gone, the crocusses and daffodils are breaking out and some of the small trees are in blossom.
I think the plants have lost their internal clocks, they seem to sprout at any time of the year. Yesterday I saw a ladybird (US:ladybug) insect.

But have you seen any red-tailed bumblebees?

Here in the States we are watching for skunk cabbage--the real sign of spring here in the Pacific Northwest (well, except for garage/boot sales). And yes, you can SMELL skunk cabbage .

i totally know what you're talking about, and i wait in eager anticipation every year for it!

however, in toronto (ontario) that will still be a couple/few weeks before that happens. unfortunately in the city that's also the time that the ice recedes to expose a layer of trash and dog poop

spring fever = me really giddy

I've been smelling it all winter. unfortunately all it means is that the 10000% humidity and daily monsoons are coming. on the good side though it does mean all the snow birds will be heading north again.

I don;t mind the snow. Don;t mind the frost either. Love it when it's cold and clear. Trouble is where I live in the UK, it's just mild, grey and miserable. Everything looks like it's covered in a layer of volcanic ash. Oh but when the new shoots breatk through and the blossom's on the trees...

We get whiffs of it here this time of year. Yesterday was 68 F, and today it is 35 F with a 25 mph North wind. It's a very transitional time here in mid America. Yesterday there were high wind warnings, blizzard warnings, thunderstorm warnings, tornado watches all in one day in one state.

Our willow tree is starting to bud, and the lawn looks like it's on steroids, I can swear I can hear the grass growing. Spring sure feels like it is here at my house.

30 degrees? 40 degrees? Sounds like you skipped spring and went right to summer!

We're still snowy here. I'm hoping for some kind of breakup mid-March.

yes. first signs of spring here is the almond trees are all abloom. A magnificant rose/ white color. No smells yet, but the earth is beginning to look springlike green. We have noticed some flies outside.
This area is a big wine/grape growing region. I noticed in my rides vineyards everywhere have sent out crews clipping off premature springs from the plants.

All I can smell is rock salt. If sleet and freezing rain had a scent, I would be smelling that too.

The birds are starting to gather nest materials, many of our flowers are starting to bloom, and all the stores around here have the flip-flops, grills, beach chairs, towels, and gardening stuff in stock. They skipped spring and went straight to summer, heh.

The freezing rain and high winds snapped telephone poles over the weekend.

The poor ground hog never seems to be correct at guessing spring.

Well according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog club, Phil is right 100% of the time. Also, according to the club, Phil is 120 years old and will live forever due to his consumption of the elixir of life. You can't debate facts.

Wow, just the thought of the smell of rock salt puts me back a couple of months.
Thinks to one's self: "it's not really winter, it's not really winter, it's not really winter..."
