Having genders for objects is common in virtually every language except English!

My philosophy for all that kinda stuff is: Anything that can be so expensive, time consuming, break down at that most inoportune moments and frustrating and yet bring so much joy and can make you grin just seeing it must be a girl.

This is where I run for cover.

By looking at the seats, I think two of my bikes are hermaphrodites.

Salsa's bike is neither a "he" or a "she" - it is a finely tuned racing machine. My older son's bike is just cool.

My nicer roadie is a she. She's my prima donna, and her name is Vivian. My backup roadie is a he. He doesn't get a name. One of the SoCal BikeForums members scolded me once when I accidently referred to Vivian as "it".

All of my bikes are refered to as "b**ches". Why, I don't know. I'm really not mysoginistic(sp?). It's a term of endearment. Same for my cars. The integra is the little b**ch and the Pathfinder is the big b**ch. Sorry if I offended anyone, but you asked.

If I'm riding something, it's gonna be a 'she' not a 'he.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's funny, I had no intention of assigning my bike a gender, but when I showed it to my roommate yesterday I inadvertently said "he's pretty cool, eh?" and we both went "Oh, it's a 'he'!" A very petite 'he', because it's light and I'm short. The kind of guy I'd be attracted to, funnily enough.

So now that you know it's a "he", you gotta name him.............

My new sig.

Bicycles are machines made of metal, plastic and rubber. Machines have no gender and my bikes have no names other than the ones printed on them by the manufacturer. My tall bike, which is made from the frames/parts of about 10 different bikes is simply called "the tallbike." I sometimes call it Murraysaurus Treks, but that's about as creative as I can be with a bicycle name.

My wife refers to my bike as my mistress, so that makes it a she.

My track bike is fixed, so I guess its an "it". I should name it "castrato" and have it guard my harem of other bikes.

My Stella is clearly a "she".

Son's Bianchi, with Edoardo's name on the headtube, is a "he".

That's not fair!!! How come the manufacturers get to name bikes and we don't? And how come boats all have names, but bikes can't? My bike's as good and dear to my heart as any stupid yacht out there!

My previous bike was a 1999 Specialized Stumpjumper that reminded me of Mr Miyagi.

My bike is definitely a "she."

I replaced my old "he" bike with a "she" bike - quite literally!

When I bought my old road bike in 1985/86, the bike shop owner recommended a bike made for a man (with the bar across) because it was a sturdier frame. I'm female and bought the bike - which was OK, except I couldn't straddle the bike without standing on partial tippy toes ...! My new bike (purchased in 2005) was made for a female. And I love, love, love it.

This sucks - and has nothing to do with your being female. The guy simply sold you a bike that was too large for you. Yes, in the 80's the geometry was different and a well-fitting bike would have less stand-over clearance than modern bikes with compact geometry, but tippy-toeing sounds like too much.

I'm glad you like your new bike, whatever gender it is. Just know that a bike with a (near-) horizontal top tube is indeed sturdier and there are plenty that would fit you.

I got it...Pantalaimon. I just read Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" and every human has a "daemon", and every person's demon is the opposite sex. So I named it after the heroine's daemon.

Yes, I am a beeeeg geek.
