Death from above... well not quite.

My helmet saved me from a different kind of injury today. I was riding along next to a park when all of a sudden something smacked into my helmet from directly above. It scared the H-E-double-hockey-sticks out of me and rattled my head a little. I instantly noticed a baseball flying away from me into the brushes. It was probably a pop-fly since it had to have gotten past the fence and bleachers that seperated the road from the field. Several kids ran up to me as I skidded to a stop and apologised. Parents wanted to know if I was okay. I told them all I was fine and the kids went scurrying off to search for the ball. Aside from having things thrown at you by rednecks in lifted pickups or pidgeons who look at you as a challenging moving target, what else has "fallen" on you while riding. I'm waiting for someone to relate a story about a meteorite.

Interesting... the other day ago on one of my casual rides some nice folks were launching model rockets in the park. I noticed some interesting smashed plastic pieces on the path just as I heard the enormous WOOSH of lift off. Luckily that one deployed a chute on its rapid descent towards the vicinity of my head. I don't think a foam based helmet is going to stop any hard plastic pointy object coming down on you at 32ft per/sec per/sec.

:roflmao:

I wonder if helmet manufacturers will advise you to replace your helmet.

Did you get any fresh ideas after the incident?

:D

California's Encino Velodrome is on Army Corps of Engineers land with about six ballfields around it; this has happened a number of times over the years at that track.

I ride by a golf course, and twice I have heard the sound of the golf ball hitting the pavement, and then nothing.

I have not been hit, but those are a few tense moments!

A acorn fell down off a tree, bounced off the road into my face. It missed my helmet but hit my specs.

Hmmm... that reminds me. I ride by a model airplane/rocketry field too sometimes. I used to be into both when I was younger. I once used an upper-stage rocket motor in a lower-stage by accident. The difference between the two types of motors is that the upper-stage engines have a time delay that allows the rocket to reach apogee before firing the ejection charge for the parachute. The lower stage's charge fires immediately and is used to ignite the next stage. The result was that when my rocket reached stage-seperation, there was a delay and the rocket tipped over. The charge then fired to ignite the next stage while the rocket was now pointing DOWN. Let's just say that I hope no one in the field I ride by ever makes that mistake.

The impact wasn't hard enough to have done any damage. I've knocked the helmet harder than that by accidently trying to get into my Jeep after a ride with it still attached.

Last year on an orginaized metric century one of the guys in the group got hit by bird poop twice under the same bridge (50 feet apart). There must have been 60 or so cyclists riding together, and he was the only one to get hit. One hit his jersey, the other hit his shoe.

I grew up in the Chicagoland area and was big into board/tabletop wargames (amogst other wargames). FASA (also being based in Chicago) used the local comic-book shops that typically sold their type of games as beta sites. As a result, I and my friends were part of the test/beta group for Battletech which originally sold as Battledroids back in 1984.
