Shimano derailleur product range confusion

Hello,

Trying to get my head around the naming and hierarchy of the Shimano range. I've found basic info which says that there is a rough quality guide that ascends Acera, Alivio, Deore (and others for road bikes). But not all bike specs seem to list these names, some just have a series of numbers and letters. Eg:

Scott Sub 20, as on the Scott website - http://www.scottusa.com/product.php?UID=9787

Derailleur (Rear)
Shimano Deore RD-M511, 24 Speed

Derailleur (Front)
Shimano FD-C051 31.8mm clamp

Shifters
Shimano Alivio SL-M410 Rapidfire plus w/gear indicator

So, what is an FD-C051, where does this fit in the range? Is it so rubbish it doesn't even have a memorable name? Has the name just been omitted here? This is a general question as I've seen these numbers without names on a lot of specs on the net. Thanks very much if you can help this confused newb.

Anyone got a link to a list/explaination of the Shimano product range, would be helpful.
