Looks like it will be great for his ride to/from school, etc.

You know when he is old enough to ride you are going to want to get him an upgrade to a newer modle.

I bought my son a Giant MTX off of ebay a couple years ago when he turned 7. It's a nice LBS bike and looks like new. The funny thing is that all of his friends have the flashy Schwinn's and Next super bling full suspension crappo jobbos, and my son is convinced that those bikes are better regardless of what i say.

I'll give him credit for trying to believe me, but i just think the bling is too much to handle. In retrospect I am glad i bought a USED LBS bike instead of new. Mine cost $70. Also I will be remembering when it is time for his next upgrade. Kids are kids, and sometimes it just makes more sense for them to have junk.

I remember someone looking down their nose from the height of their xmart Mongoose, and referring to Siu's Fuji as a no name bike. Sheese, such ignorance is to be cherished

Mate of mine bought a Cannondale for his son and took the stickers off, reckoning that a "Dale" would quickly get stolen. His son had the same problem as it was like trainers- He had a no name bike now. All his mates had Saracen or Apollos- Another Wallmart equivalent over here. Luckily the son realised the quality and just kept quiet.

this is his 3rd bike. his first was an xmart "tonka" bike. looked like a construction tractor with matching water bottle etc. the next was a super-cool looking "next" bmx bike. the friggin thing weighted 40lbs.

the crank/bb nut came loose on both. one came all the way off until the bearings/cup fell out. i got tired of paying $30-$60 a pop for nothing but shi-ite. i bought him the trek new. probably wasn't the best deal but i like the shop and i was sick of looking at crap bikes everywhere else.

when he outgrows it, try back at the same shop - they just might buy it back from you.

My LBS gave us back 2/3 of the cost (different shop, mind you that doesn't even sell Trek) when we traded up after 1.5 years - kid decided he needed gears and a single speed wasn't cutting it.

Hey, I'm with ya. I am a bike nut so I'll spring for a good bike for my kid. It's just frustrating that after you get them a nicer, lighter LBS bike they look at all their buddies crap Walmart bikes with the fancy paint, and shock looking thingies, and think they must be much cooler because EVERYONE else has them.
