    Question About Kona Asphalts

I'd been riding my 27 year old Schwinn ten speed for, well, 27 years (bike paths and some gravel road), and decided it was time to reward myself with a new hybrid bike. I'm obviously new at bike shopping, and know nothing about bikes, so I did some research, read reviews, and visited my local bike shop dealer. I ended up with what I thought was a 2007 Kona Dr. Dew. The dealer wanted me to go into a higher-priced Scott sub10, but the ride was too stiff for me and the price was about $350 more than the Kona.

When I got my new bike home, I started nosing around it and on the internet some more, and found that according to the kona website the dr. dew comes ONLY in green. It's the Kona fs that comes in brown. However, my bike is brown but has "dr. dew" on it. Upon even closer inspection I also found that the components are those of the fs, according to the Kona website.

I'm not unhappy with the bike, and I paid what appears to be the dew fs price ($699) rather than the dr. dew price ($999), so I'm not feeling ripped off. However, I am curious about how a Kona fs that supposedly comes only in brown can be had with the brown frame that says "dr. dew." As I said, I'm a newbie, so I apologize if this is a foolsih question.

Oh, that's too much of a question for me to answer--all my bikes except for one are over 20 years old.

Uh, did you say you have a Schwinn ten speed? 27 years old? Got lugs? Um, could you post photos in the Classic & Vintage forum when you stop by to say hi?

    Welcome to BF!

Take the bike back to the shop and ask the OWNER/MANAGER to explain this.
If he can't explain it or won't make things right, then it's time to call the cops (fraud).
Either way report it to Kona.

Hi there! Welcome to bikeforums. I own a Dew Deluxe and have put thousands of miles on it. Even took it to France last year. I hope you enjoy your Kona as much as I enjoy mine.

Might you have possibly bought the 2005 Dr. Dew? Is this your bike?

Thanks for the quick responses. But no, Velo, that's not my bike. The one I bought is brown and has as best as I can tell the spec components of the fs.

From the responses so far it seems you're all more or less suggesting that when a company's website lists a bike as coming in a certain color, that is the only color that model comes in. I guess I was wondering if a certain model might be shown in a certain color but be available in other colors. If that were so, then I thought maybe I'd bought a dr. dew frame with fs components (which would be weird because the frames are the same material on both models).

What's weird too though is that the local bike shop dealer wasn't charging the more expensive dr. dew price. So I don't know what's going on.

I think I'd do what Ron suggested, and go back and ask the same questions of the owner/manager that you've asked us.

Let's just say it sounds really odd.

I think I'll do that. Sounds like no one here has heard of how this might have happened. I thought maybe it was a regular kind of thing - color changes and so on.

Help! Question on kona dr. dew

Can anybody tell me what color the 2006 dr. dew came in? The kona website shows a picture of a green bike, but under the specs list the frame color is listed as gold.

So which is it? Does anybody know?

You know, you aren't the only person who's been asking about the Kona Dr. Dew...there's a thread in General Cycling about the correct specs as well.

Where are you located? I wonder if it could be country specific. I've seen that before where other countries carry certain colors.

This is a 2007 avail in the UK. This link is an article about it.http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...LD:en%26sa%3DN

Doesn't the FS have a suspension fork? The FS is the only bike in the dew series that has one.

If you have the Nex 4510 forks as you say on Kona Owners forum, I would suggest you have a 2007 Dew FS with the wrong sticker on it. The first thing I would suggest is to contact Kona US with your concerns and tell them what you would like to have done to resolve the situation. With the serial nimber they can tell you what bike you should have. Ask the dealer why the bike came with components and colors not as listed.

Manufactors normaly have the right to change components with changing their specifications. But, I have never heard of a manufacturer replacing a standard fork with a suspension fork.

P.S. The standard fork will give you a firmer ride (E.G. they will not absorb the bumps as softly), which gives you a more responsive feel.

Thanks for all the help. It looks like it comes down to one of two possibilities: it's an fs with the wrong sticker, or it's a dr. dew frame (like the frame shown above) with fs components. Since the two frames are made from the same material and are the same component it's about the same thing. The dealer thinks it's a wrong sticker. Either way, he did not charge me the more expensive dr. dew price, so it was not a case of the dealer trying to cheat me.

Since I also like the bike I am keeping it, and am going to simply call it "dr. doofus."

Thanks again for helping me solve this mystery.

Put it this way. You now have a rare bike.
