cheap MTB.

I figure a mountain bicycle is a mountain bicycle...why claim the name to a mountain bicycle if it cannot do what a mountain bicycle is suppose to do?..I'm refering to ordinary store bicycle sales.

Well climbing a mountain takes a good rider Not all mtb are created the same no doubt about that, you can get a really strong one like the Banshee (weighs a ton, not good for riding up mountain) or lower end one designed for trails and will go up mountain easier

I take mountain bike just to refer to a more rugged bike, that can handle off-road activity, but then you get alot of sub classes in mtb bikes.. downhill..freeride..xc which all have different purposes. While road bike rides the roads.. of course then you get the inbetween bikes to like Cyclocross.. hybrid.. comfort etc... Of course even in the road bike category you have quite a few sub classes to.

Ive climbed mountains on bikes which were not mountain bikes. My tourer has probably tackled more off-road than 90% of MTBs ever see.
What do NORBA class as an MTB. Do they have to have 26" wheels?

Some new MTBs have 29 inch wheels so it's not wheel diameter. I would expect to see tire sizes larger than x 1.5 if not x1.75

My theory is that "Dirt Bikes" was already taken!

I see the term ATB (All Terrain Bike) used a lot. Probably helps sales in places far removed from any mountains.

The problem is that in the absence of a legal definition of the term, a Mountain Bike can be pretty much whatever a manufacturer wants it to be.

I had the idea that a 29er wasnt legal for NORBA races...

I thought the term mountain bike was coined when the "pioneers" of mtb(joe Breeze, Gary Fisher et. al.) would take their bikes and ride down a mountain?
