This is the first thread I have ever started, here goes:
My boss and his wife were out on a tandem ride this weekend when someone in a truck threw a drink at them and hit them. They managed to get the tag number and chanted it to each other all the way to the house. Once there, they called 911 and were referred to thesherriffs department where they gave the number and described the truck. The sherriffs department matched the number to a truck and a deputy went to the registerd address where he found the truck parked in the front yard. Knocking on the door got no response, so the deputy called the house. The person that answered the phone admitted to driving the truck and throwing the drink. A time was arranged so the deputy could issue a citation. But at the agreed time no one would answer the door. After trying this several times with out success, the charge was upped to resisting arrest and assault, the kid(The son of a local business man) was picked up and jailed. Turns out, surprise, he also has an outstanding drug warrant. Unfortunatly, I am not King, so he will not be publicly beaten with a an old track chain for the next week, but maybe he will at least chill in the can for a couple of months.

They did not get hurt, but were pretty pissed.

I'm glad they were OK. In a way I'm kind of glad the tossers "resisted arrest" too, becuase they'll probably cop a heavier penalty for that than they would have done for the original offence.

King.... ahem Rev. Chuck.... what's so special about a track chain that makes it a more suitable instrument of punishment than say... a road or an MTB chain??

I actually had a soda thrown at me recently (it missed), but its good to hear that reporting this stuff to the cops actually made something happen. I guess they had an advantage being able to chant the tag number to each other on the way back and not forget it!

It seems to me that frequently nothing would happen because its your word against theirs, but that's another story.

In a related incident, a friend and I were taking turns doing pulls down a local state route here a couple years ago and were riding right on te painted line at the edge of the road, as there was no breakdown lane to ride in, when a state trooper pulled up and yelled at us over his loudspeaker to move over. It came as such a complete surprise that we almost crashed right there. He then took off and we were left confused and VERY angry. Angry enough that we then rode to the local barracks and lodged a complaint. Thankfully we had the presence of mind to get the unit number off the back of the car. The trooper behind the desk listened to us politely and remarked that they had had several similar incidents with this same trooper. Chris, my riding partner at that time, was in particularly rare form and really conveyed our anger quite nicely.

I wish all drivers gave us enough room and didnt try to ruin our rides, but it is always the small minority of dweebs that seem bent on this.

I think I would send the Sheriifs dept. a thank you note for thier dilligence. You don't get that type of service everywhere.

I don't know about NC, but here in AL, throwing a "missile or other object" at or into a moving vehicle is a felony. Might be something to check into.

This should be a felony, potentially deadly attack. The authorities who want less polution, more healthy people, etc. etc, should look at this and send the message to potential commuters/riders that they are protected from attacks. Citation for this is nothing, specially when it is so easy for the violators to get away if they succeed. I don't see much difference between that action and someone taking randon shots at folks. The shooter would get lot more response than citation.

Ya know not to change the topic but this reminds me of something that occured to me just last week.

I live waaaay outside of town and I regularly walk a 4km route in the evenings. I pass this house where a (approx) 4 year old kid lives, very friendly he'll always look up from his toys and give me a merry wave and a hello and I wave back. He doesn't know my name nor I his.

The last 2 times I passed this same house on my bike, this kid throw a book at me the first time and a stick at me the second. I doubt he knew I was the same guy as I look radically differant in bike shorts, jersey, helmet, etc.

This happens alot in other situations.

No I didn't stop as parents terrify me. But it IS amazing how as a pedestrian ya don't get harrased but on a bike it happens ALL the time.

Boy, they sure start early. Now what has happended in that kids short life to start a hate on for cyclists? Or is it just a moving target to em?
