Anyone use LowOz?
Just got a sample pack of a sport drink called LowOz, from Ultimate Performance, a division of Rexall Drugs, the parent company of GNC, Met-Rx & Nutricia. Has anyone used this stuff? Their main pitch is that the mix contains magnesium, which few (none?) of the others do, and that the osmolality is at a level which promotes rapid uptake of fluid.
My boss knows I am one of the few endurance atheletes (me?) in our company around here. There have been problems with many of the field hands falling out from heat stress and dehydration, and he wants me test this stuff to see if we want to make it standard issue. I plan to start testing it out tomorrow.
One guy here had to be treated at the ER due to dehydration after a day at work, and another fell out from the heat. Both have been using LowOz and have not had further problems. But is it due to better personal awareness? Any sport drink will be absorbed faster that water.
Personally, Gatorade upsets my stomach, so I usually use Powerade mixed at about 65%, or straight water for shorter, hotter rides. On long rides, I use water and full-strength Powerade, alternating. Now bear in mind this is all taking place in lower Louisiana, where themps and humidity are both in the 90's this time of year.
I will post results and anything else I learn & thanks.

Ok, had my first good trial of this stuff today. Rained this morning, so the usual group ride did go. Abotu 16:00, the clouds finally cleared out, nice and hot, and away I went. The heat index was about 105 - 108 DEGF, tapering off to 99 by the time I got back.
I decided to give this stuff a hard trial, since no group to worry about. Mixed two bottles full strength for the ride. Usually, I start drinking after 10-15 minutes, taking a 2-4 oz shot every 10-15 minutes. Today, I went 30 hard minutes (80 % HMR) before touching a bottle, then slugged down half of a 24 oz bottle. Kept doing that pattern for two hours. And it worked!. Other sport drinks I have tried would have had me hurting under this protocol, with serious stomach upset. Today, just a small twinge, which may have been all between my ears. LowOz performed just like the hype, emptying out of my stomach fast, rapid rehydration. Even with 48 oz drank on the ride, I was still down 1 pound weight when I got home. Another fine, warm day in Cajun country.
