Looks like it would work

Schampa - Fleeceprene Half Mask with Mesh Breather

... but I can't find it anywhere. It's been discontiued by Schampa. Please re-post it you find it somewhere online.

The hunting stores "Bass Pro Shops" have netted face masks ... but they are all camoflage.

https://www.rockheadbikes.com/Schampa...h_p/501151.htm

I just ordered from these people ... $36 after shipping. I hope it works. I have something else from Schampa, but the mesh area isn't big enough for breating.

Also ... You'll need to adjust the fit each time you look backwards as it tends to move with your head.

As for bugs in the mouth, just close it
I have the same problem as the OP. I try to keep my mouth closed, but sometimes when I'm out of the saddle, climbing a steel hill I HAVE to open my mouth.

Anyway, I was coming down a mountain at a pretty good clip one time and swallowed a very large bug (not sure what it was because it happened too fast but the wings were huge so I assumed it was a dragon fly or something). It literally shot down my throat in an instant and the impact of hitting the back of my throat killed it. It wasn't that bad... kind of salty.

Well, I never did get to move.

What you could look into now for this problem is Zipper makes a fairing suitable for mounting on an upright bike.
https://www.zzipper.com/
They have the little one shown on the TT bike, but I am thinking of the much bigger one shown on the RANS Zenetic. I've never seen the kit in person, but it looks like it shouldn't be impossible to fit onto a regular bike.

I have also noticed that the clouds of gnats don't like car traffic; they don't congregate near roads with many cars going by.

Another thing to check is where your headlight is mounted.
My first recumbent bike had a seating position so reclined that if I put a headlight on the usual handlebar location, it ended up about three inches below the level of my chin, and the result was a never-ending stream of bugs hitting me in the face at night. When I moved the headlight down to the front wheel axle, the bugs-in-the-face stopped totally.

I have the same problem as I ride the bike trails in the Pearl River Swamp. Lots of "protein" getting in the mouth and nose. I've thought about getting some mosquito netting, and making a one layer mask to go over just the mouth/nose area. It wouldn't be as noticeable as a bandana and certainly not as awkward looking as a dry wall mask. It would allow lots of air to enter but keep the small insects at bay.

15 knot on shore winds every afternoon, keep them at bay.. I only encountered Mozzys when by a lake, fishing, sheltered by trees.

Move to Arizona. It's 99% bug free. That's why I live here. No bugs, and best of all no stinking/sticky humidity. Lovely jubley.

Never really had this problem while cycling. When I was running down in Georgia once I swallowed a horse fly. Yeah that was really gross, I gagged quite a bit and yes I left a little mess by the trail.

Bug usually have a time when they swarm so best to set you hours to cycle when they do not. In the big city bugs aren't usually a big problem unless you're going by or live by a body of fresh water.

When I lived in Florida that was a huge issue near the bog. The mosquitoes would literally eat you alive. Just don't stop in those areas. Most bug are just annoying pests, but the biting one can cause you some serious misery.

Agreed. But this issue is still something I am facing. I guess there are some more.
I did a Google search and this thread came up. If I can provide some solution, maybe this thread can help others in the future. This is the power of community provided solutions.

First post was 11 years ago -- and it's been resurrected 3 times now.

Appropriate that it's a post about bugs. Something about the cockroaches being the only thing that will survive nuclear war?

Anyway I can sympathize -- I have congenital sinus issues that make breathing through my nose virtually impossible in hard efforts. I've swallowed my share of bugs. I usually manage to breathe through my teeth if I see clouds of them but sometimes they slip in. I just try to wash them down with water and enjoy the protein.

That has to be an enormous conscience effort. Why not just wear a mask or scarf?

I mean, it's not really that much of a problem most of the time. Not worth the extra effort.
